My brother working at university hospital in Texas and myself and my fellow scientist working at California public health department. You are right career workers do not care about the federal idiocy and have kept doing their jobs. Even in the devasted State Department Justice Department and FBI. They will be happy to get a chance to do their jobs without worry. Career workers at the EPA will be happy to be able to use the words climate change again. Yes everyone has tried to ignore the big orange elephant in the room but it has not been east or without consequence.

Okay since I'm having fun let's talk about masks. No they are not bull. But first I want to ask question; would you give a lit welders torch to someone who doesn't know what it is or how to use it? Of course not; that would be dumb. Someone would get burned or something would get blown up.
Now same with masks. Wear a mask; it will protect the great society.When you enter any healthcare profession you are given a course on sterility; how to protect, the environment you work in and how to protect others. That course must be repeated every so often in order to maintain your credentials. If not you're out!
The government told us to wear masks just like giving a welders torch to someone who has no clue what to do. Was the public every given the information on how to wear them properly? Not really at all; just wear it and you're good to go. Wrong.
First your mask is protect you and you alone.Why? Because you're not sick and you don't want to get sick. If you're sick you stay home in your room and away from people.
Ever see a guy with a bad flu? I'm sure you have.Is the sick guy wearing a mask? Nope and why; he can barely breathe he's so sick a mask will kill him. Now if you want to go into his room and bring him soup to feel better YOU wear the mask so you don't get sick. It is self protection.
Now how exactly do you wear a mask? With hands freshly washed you take the mask out of it's holder and put it on, pinching by the nose and making it as airtight as you can.How many of you guys wash your hands before you put the mask on? I bet none.
Now with a paper mask are you aware it's good for about 3 hours before it starts breaking down? Do you change your mask every three hours? I don't think so. I have seen masks so beat up they grow fuzz. Now that's protection right? Nope. Go get your grocery cart, gab the handle and as you go into the market reach in and pull your beat up mask out of your pocket and you're good to go right? Now that's protection right?
Next time you go in a store look at people; look at how many times they touch their face to adjust the mask. We all touch our face way too often but now we have an excuse to touch it even more. Take your hand you just picked up a can of peas with and bring it up to adjust a beat up filthy mask and you'll never get sick.
As for the cloth mask; dirty underwear would be better. At least there are germs in there that may kill the other germs.
We told the public to wear a mask; they'll be safe. What we did is give a loaded gun to a child. No you are not safe. Wanna know why we have a spike in covid now? Because more people are wearing masks because they feel protected so they're out and about more wearing a mask that is not protecting them.
The NY State health commisioner has a great commercial telling us to wear masks,wash hands and social distance. Not one tv spot explaining the proper way to wear one, how to properly put it on and how often to change them. If you do not follow the basic protocols than BigO is right; masks are bull. They will cause more harm than good.

Well I would say your public health department ain't really doing it's job just like many state health departments across the country but you guys have a scapegoat and always have. Most people are defeating the point of wearing the masks by how they do it how they adjust them taking them off to speak and holding the mask with dirty hands then putting back on. Doing this over and over. Also moisture starts to bring down the effectiveness of surgical masks. You can't wear them forever without loss of effectiveness. I totally agree that there should have been messaging on how to use them. I spoke with my staff on how to use masks. I also demonstrated the proper way to wash hands and how to stay as safe as possible in public restrooms. But education in a broad sense was sorely lacking. High five on that post. If we were chatting at a coffee shop I would be being you a coffee for sure.

And he has yet to own up to that mistake (so much for him correcting for new data) and say that it created panic that lead to lockdowns. And should we still be pushing that messaging now that the studies have shown absolutely no correlation between mask compliance and case counts? When new information comes out, we should be ready and willing to change course, right?
Touché. I would say yes if I didn't think the jury is still out on that. My staff and I do know how to wear masks and the proper way to put on gloves and take them off. The proper way to wash hands. The message is not to my mind wrong just incomplete which impacts the affect. I will not disagree or disagree with you on this. I will wait for more data not stats data.

You informed your staff? You got hospitals filling up with sick people and about to be over run and you informed your staff? Your staff should have been instructed on proper sanitary conditions the minute they were hired covid or not. You have a public health budget not including fed help of a couple hundred million dollars and no one made a tv spot directing and educating people in all the right things to do? Please tell me I'm wrong and you have made may educational tv spots to PROTECT PEOPLES LIVES! Hey my staff works in and office and yes I am responsible for them so I also got all of them approve to telewirk until it is safe to be together. We are all working towards helping the people if California. Thank you for acknowledging how dire the Covid threat is and that it is real. Great to hear you admit that. Oh and I taught my family and close friends the safe hygiene protocols. Hopefully you used your vast knowledge to help those close to you as well.

Sure there is. So perhaps I misunderstood - I thought the argument was about putting lives before business. It's about saving lives. I assumed the argument was in favor of all lives, not just those that aren't from the flu or that are in excess of a certain number. So it's about saving 250K lives, then? Not the other 80K? Is there a threshold when suddenly saving lives is more important than the economy and people's business and livelihood? I just assumed we were supposed to care about all the lives. What's the number then?

Wearing a mask would most likely prevent some of the deaths due to the flu, but there is significant opposition to wearing a mask when 330,000 (and growing) lives have been lost. Imagine the opposition when only 22,000 lives are impacted.

Just heard that the Florida Governor has decided seniors over 65 will have the same status as front line workers on a first come first serve basis as opposed to the CDC recommendation that only seniors over 75 be on the second priority list.
You are right that it us too easy to blame Trump for everything he is just accellerant on the fires if medical illiteracy consuming the country. I can't say enough about how much I admire Dr Fauci and his 40 years of experience trying to work with Trump baby balloon. I am an atheist but if I did believe in god I would thank him for Fauci dedication in the face of criticism and death threat. Who the frack threatens an epidemiologist try to help the country. The health secretary of California and the Governor address the state almost everyday with information about hygiene masks and the state of the state. I am sorry other state are not doing the same. California is in a bad way and for all the people who think masks are part of a dictatorship. The proof that we are free to do what we want is how many people in California used their freedom to do whatever and are now in the hospital.
