If it doesn't get back on topic I'll close it down.

Played golf today with a guy who volunteers at a local food bank. He said he voluntarily gets tested every month to be safe but was wondering if he should be put on the top priority list for the vaccine.

I'm honestly more worried about the vaccine being mandated than getting the virus. Regardless of views or opinions, my stance is let nature take it's course. When humanity tries to intervene with the course of nature we tend to create our own little monsters inadvertently. Yes vaccines have saved countless lives over the flow of time but anything viral is bound to mutate and make futile man's attempts.

The aussie feds have said they will not mandate the vaccine . They have moved forward the rollout to the end of Feb.

without the vaccine, medical professionals predict that there
will be several more hundreds of thousands of deaths. Obviously, you were not around when polio ran rampant.

Nope, I wasn't and I stand corrected. Polio is indeed a virus that was eradicated by a vaccine. I'm thinking more of flu shots I guess. They are only partially effective and seem to become less and less every year, that is until corona showed up and the flu all but disappeared.

There is a good point here the steps taken against covid were also effective against flu . The death rate from covid in aussie in very few but the deaths from flu also plummeted.

The risk vs reward calculation is very different, of course. Polio was paralyzing tens of thousands of children every year, whereas COVID is a danger primarily to the elderly. I'm not disputing whether we should allow viruses to run rampant - just saying that rushing to a vaccine has to take these things into account. You have to weigh whether the benefits of it will outweigh the costs (potential long-term harm, etc...). Keep in mind that there were some 40,000 vaccine induced polio infections when they first administered the vaccine, as well as a handful of children killed by it.

I am personally not afraid of Covid; however, my wife suffers with COPD, bronchitis, and asthma and would have trouble surviving Covid. Therefor, in order to protect her, I will take the vaccination at the earliest available date.

I would do the same. As a word of caution though, my kids once got the flu from a niece that had just gotten the flu shot. Apparently there was enough active in her to be contagious. I know one could say that it's just coincidence but my kids are homeschooled and had no other contact with anyone else outside the immediate family and no other family members were sick or got sick at that time. Not sure how this vaccine will work but you may want to quarantine yourself from her after getting the vaccine or (obviously) both get the vaccine at the same time.
