Living in California and being part of the public health response to COVID your comment is well informed. California was earlier than other states to do a lockdown and mask but it was already too late. The failures here are owned by the Federal and Local Governments and a public to a large degree that are resistant to information that conflicts with whatever they happen to think. Much the same was the case when in 1984 New York instituted the law to wear seatbelts and it took 11 years for other states to pass it into law. There were "studies" put forward that your chances of surviving a high speed crash increased if you could be thrown from the car instead of wearing a seatbelt. Then there were the first amendment challenges. "You can't make me, I have rights." Thankfully the first amendment does not protect free speech, but it does allow for ridiculous and ill informed speech. The arc of seatbelt acceptance is illustrative of the arc of acceptance with these new precautions. Public health is still trying to push back on the debunk "study" that vaccines cause autism which was yet another veiled attempt at flouting public health efforts misguidedly thinking them infringements on liberties. As with seat belts, the sheer numbers of deaths and more legitimate information triumphant a decade. We have seen this many times, other countries have learned their lessons, we have not. I guess we need a few more pandemic (which are inevitable) and a lot more deaths to sober the public into being appropriately cautious. California has also really dropped the ball on the vaccine roll out and the Governor is at some point going to have to speak to why that is the case. California is in good company as most, not all, have botched the roll out because there has been no Federal oversight and states are ill equipped to scale up to what is required. Hopefully that will start to change in just over 24 hours and over the next hundred days.

If you would read the research I've been providing, you would see that there is zero correlation between lockdown timing and case counts or deaths. I'm not sure why you would choose make that argument against the evidence except that you have chosen to ignore and/or dismiss the evidence because it contradicts what you want to believe. Again... cognitive dissonance.

Fizz - Can you use another analogy instead of seat belts? If I want to put my own life in danger, that's on me. The US government wasn't constructed with the purpose of protecting me from myself. I was ok with stoplights - they have proven to be effective in preventing me from killing someone else. But efficacy is at the heart of that and it has to be. We have to be able to weight the cost against the benefit to make these kinds of decisions but the efficacy of masks is very much in question. You, personally choose to not question it, but the scientific community at large (not just the ones you defer to) says otherwise.

According to the CDC, there were an estimated flu related deaths during the 2017 - 2018 flu season of 46,000 to 95,000. The estimated deaths due to Covid-19 (perhaps including some flu deaths) is over 500,000 through mid February. I wouldn’t consider that a scare tool!

I think the analogy works. If you are a threat to yourself or others you can be Baker Acted. Society still frowns on self harm. Wishing you the best. Stay safe and health. The number of cases and death continue to mount not to scare anyone but continue mask wearing and practicing social distancing all the things we know work. Cheers

Society can frown on whatever they like. That doesn't make it the job of the government to prevent it from happening. Thousands of people die every year from drowning - perhaps we should outlaw swimming without scuba gear. You're ok with being told what to do with your life by the government. Most of us - and the folks who wrote The Constitution - are not.

How do you know they work? People who claim to follow the science would be aware that masks have now been proven to be virtually ineffective at preventing the spread of the virus. Just sayin...

100%. When you turn off the television and stay logged out of social media and experience reality, the fear is longer there and reasoning and logic are restored. This goes beyond COVID.

Thanks for bringing this up. Yes I am concerned, a lot of people are quietly concerned. Im not trying to be conspiratorial or political but the truth is that the government has forced us into lockdown while at the same time not allowing us access to medicine that nearly cures Covid, such as ivermectin. If you've never heard of it, its a malaria drug that's been around since the 70's and there have been plenty of recent studies showing its efficacy in treating covid and reducing hospital time in patients. It can even be used prophylactically. They're censoring information about this drug, while at the same time strongly encouraging the use of an RNA vaccine which is more properly defined as gene therapy. I don't know why they are doing this but I know its not in our best interest. And yes, testosterone reduction is worth considering, as well as impotence.
It should be noted that the vaccine only works for about four months, and may not stop you from getting Covid asymptomatically and transmitting it. As someone not at risk, I see no reason why I should get the vaccine. Give it to the people who want it to keep them safe. There's no clinical evidence to show that getting a vaccine for a disease that you aren't at risk for is a good idea.

I don't trust the vaccines for COVID and with the shadiness that surrounds the different companies that created them, I am now skeptical about vaccines for other things like the flu shot now. Just like everything surrounding COVID, none of the stories seem to add up. From politicians telling us all of the rules that are in place to combat this novelty, only to see them breaking those same rules minutes after echoing them, to the CDC/WHO changing up their stories play-by-play. If Politicians need to "ease" everybody's concerns by going live to inject a needle in their arm to try and prove something, it only makes it more questionable. I think critical thinking is the most important skill people can arm themselves with.

There is a routine from George Carlin on germs that I think pretty much sums it all up. By using hand sanitizer and washing our hands every couple of hours, we are ridding ourselves of the germs necessary that our immune systems rely on to build up our defenses against viruses. That and Vitamins and minerals.

You guys don't think that since this opportunity arose our government is using it as a test case to see how quickly we can make something to ward off a biological attack from someone do you?

It’s primary focus is to end a pandemic. However, if they can gain a little knowledge regarding fighting off a future biological attack, so be it. Unfortunately, the government already has a problem walking and chewing gum at the same time.

I think our government had more interest in politicizing it more than anything. Coincidentally, WHO came out a couple days ago, I think it was the day of the inauguration or the day after, and admitted that their testing of COVID produced a ridiculous number of false positives. But this was common knowledge to a lot of people as there were tests being done on things like a glass of Coca-Cola and fruits that came out positive. During much of the pandemic, NY had some of the worst statistics and their economy tanked hardcore with all the restrictions. After the inauguration, Cuomo came out and said they need to all get back to work and open up the economy again. But the cases are still at an all time high.

I don't put enough trust in the government to be able to say that they have our best interests in mind.

Well some time has gone by so are we still all bet out of shape over covid? Do we all still think we're gonna die tomorrow because of this little bug or are we coming to our senses or just getting sick of the whole thing?

Living outside the U.S. during this had been interesting. I just hope some biosecurity lessons are learned. I pray we are seeing the light of sanity and things start normalizing soon around the world.
