I think P90x is working for me because it's completely different. I couldn't do the workouts at all hardly during the first month. Now I run out of steam by the halfway point if not sooner. I figure I may need 2x cycles in a row (a total of 6 months) to really adapt to it. & At that point I might try "insanity".
You know what though, working out, outdoors is really a great idea. A gym is stuffy & it gets boring... I think being outside is so much healthier too. I probably need to do it more (like what you're doing).
It sounds like you're going for the full-body improvement, not just PE. I hope to do that also...
