Could somebody please summarise for me what The Prince is or what philosophies it represents?

Wikipedia confused me.

The Prince (in HTML here) is basically a theory of power, control and how to rule. Have a look at the table of contents linked there for an overview.

Summarily, Machiavelli asserts that a great ruler is powerful and feared rather than benevolent and kind, although the appearance of benevolence is important so as to instil patriotism. As such, a kingdom (or principality) is best served by strength rather than compassion. Hence the word "Machiavellian" which refers to a heartless exhibition of self-serving power, supposedly, but not necessarily to the benefit of its subject.

The sparknotes are pretty concise.

I would also note that since its publication in the 16th century, Italy has not been known for its great empire.

That Machiavelli is a right bugger. Diabolical. The Prince was suppose to be for politics, but it has moved into everyday life. Lot's of the way things are done you would be surprised to find out that it was put forth by Machiavelli. I don't have the words to describe how sinister his philosophy is.

I don't think the world will end, and honestly I think Obama will come and go, as will who ever follows him, with nothing too eventful besides lost civil liberties.
I think most conspiracies will end up being false, but don't think people are foolish at all for believing them or asking the tough questions, our government is mostly good people but don't doubt that truly awful people find their way in there and have influence, example
Operation Northwoods

I am kinda worried abou this. I was watching the news yesterday when Obama was talking about pulling troops from Afghanistan. Jon Stewart did a little joke about how he had this huge press conference to announce he was only removing a small portion of troops (total amount of troops on ground is higher than they were when he entered office).

Obama went on to talk about Libya and how there are 0 US troops on ground, and said something along the lines of how international efforts in wars is how they are going to be won.

I personally am a bit worried about this. It sounds like a rallying call to me. Most of American public like Obama for getting Osama, so it is easy for him to slip the idea of a international effort AKA world war into their heads. It becomes even easier for him to do this when he compares Afghanistan (mainly US effort, huge failure) to Libya (mainly UN effort, significant success). People think, "hmm, we have lots of US ground troops in Afghanistan and we didn't have much significant progress". And then they look at Libya and see the benefits of a more cooperative effort and almost unconsciously begin to support world war before the word even appears in political rhetoric.

This is how politicians prime the public for new decisions. Its all subconscious. Without even think lots of people would watch that news coverage and come away from it in support of huge groups of countries all taking sides against one another. Awesome. That sounds just like a eugenics movement to me.

I think the man himself describes his politics perfectly:

- It is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both.

- Men are so simple and yield so readily to the desires of the moment that he who will trick will always find another who will suffer to be tricked.

- Men ought either to be indulged or utterly destroyed, for if you merely offend them they take vengeance, but if you injure them greatly they are unable to retaliate, so that the injury done to a man ought to be such that vengeance cannot be feared.

- Politics have no relation to morals.

- There is no surer sign of decay in a country than to see the rites of religion held in contempt.

- There is no avoiding war; it can only be postponed to the advantage of others.

- There are three kinds of intelligence: one kind understands things for itself, the other appreciates what others can understand, the third understands neither for itself nor through others. This first kind is excellent, the second good, and the third kind useless.

The world won't end in 2012. The world will end on August 29, 2029. That is when the machines will become self aware and cause a rebellion. I know this because I saw it in a documentary.

Some argue that The Prince is so extreme in its views and so divergent from its predecessors that it was actually intended to be satirical in nature.

I do not dismiss the 2012. I don't know if it will happen. Who knows.

As far as world politics go, for all I know Obama could be planning WWIII. I don't put anything past world governments. Obama sure isn't on America's side.

I don't trust Fox News. Murdoch is a nasty piece of work. Pay attention to the language they use. It's very easy for a person or organisation for whom communication is their business to suggest things without necessarily declaring them as fact. Omission of critical information and bias can be immensely powerful without necessarily being an outright lie. And they can always brush off BS as opinion.

Don't forget, scandal sells papers and advertising space.

I dont think Fox news are alone in this by any means. The news media in general is constantly under investigation, and they do lie. As it happens there's a mobile phone tapping scandal going on in the UK right now, where many people are being fined and losing their jobs in the media for snooping on celebrities (probably among others). That's about listening in on calls though, not remotely activating the microphone and transmitter.

According to the article, which seems significantly better researched and presented, the technique of activiating the microphone and the transmitter whilst not on a call requires third party software installed on the device. This I can believe, no problem. It's a wholly different proposition from saying the FBI can simply listen to your phone's microphone. See "omission of critical information" above. Of course this would also appear on the phone user's bill, presumably as data charges.

I said it up before and I'll say it again. Don't trust the media, and if you must watch the news, please read or watch a number of reports on the same story from different sources and research things that are opinion-forming. Otherwise you get things happening like we had here a few years ago where paediatricians were targeted by angry hate mobs, getting their windows smashed, threatened, and if I recall correctly, beaten up too.

I have been thinking about this. I was thinking of asking what you consider a credible source. Then I said to myself, well, you would dismiss anything on the internet because anyone can put up whatever they want. Cusp has a thread that goes along with that thinking. Then I thought that Fox is a national news station and they just can't say anything they want. I thought some more and realized no source would be good enough because you simply don't believe it. There would never be credible sources, you can say it is misinformation, disinformation, scare tactics so on and so on. I doubt if you went directly to the FBI they would admit it! So, you continue saying it isn't true.

God bless Texas.
But...Remember, our "Government" has FA18's, BlackHawks and all the really good trick stuff.
They would put down any "Resistance" in a heartbeat and call it a "Terrorist activity" to justify killing Americans.
We are truly fucked if we try to assemble against the "Powers" with any show of force. If they come to get your guns, best to just give them up. Otherwise, they will just send an RPG through your house.
But before that happens to me, there will be 3 people missing. Me and the two guys they send to take my guns. (jP
