Is ED psychological if you have morning wood?

ED may be have a physical or mental cause. The standard way of distinguishing between the two is whether you get morning wood or not. The idea is that if you can get an erection in the morning, but not for sex, then your plumbing is working, but not your brain. This always bothered me since I have been diagnosed with a venous leak using a Doppler test. I also have coronary artery disease which are both physical reasons for my ED. However, I don't have relationship problems, or believe that sex is dirty. I also don't view porn or solo masturbate. These are the kinds of things thought to be psychological causes of ED. In spite of this, I still occasionally have morning erections, which according to some means my ED is not in my vascular system but in my head. This has always bothered me.
I found this study which clears the issue up for me:
<REMOVED>
One problem is that morning erections or lack thereof are often used as the only criterion for determining whether the ED is physical or psychological. However, they authors discuss cases of people with documented psychological ED, as well as cases of people with no ED at all, who don't wake up with a stiffy. In other words, some people whose plumbing works fine during sex have no morning wood.
One problem is that studies using morning erections as a criterion for determining if ED is mental or physical don't back up their diagnosis with other, independent tests besides morning erections. Another issue is determining what is a normal. They count things like how many erections happen at night, how hard they are, and how long they last. Where do you draw the line in the sand between normal (meaning the cause is psychological) and abnormal meaning the cause is physical? The line in the sand can't bet how you measure up to some medical norm, but whether things work like they are supposed to in bed. In addition, if you've got physical ED, that by itself gives you psychological insecurities as well. You get performance anxiety. Is it going to work? Is it getting soft? Is my partner sick of having to deal with my ED? So it may be the case that having physical ED leads to some mental causes too.
So what is the take away? Morning wood or lack of morning wood doesn't tell you whether your ED is mental or physical as doctors and everyone else have been assuming for years.

My ED is Diabetes related. Perhaps not a direct answer to your question, but I haven’t had a non medically induced erection for over ten years. Before that, I would occasionally get a weak morning semi.

It is possible you do not have a severe veneous leak and that your morning wood occurs because you are able to overcome your leak under certain conditions which are not always present. If you quite often have wood throughout the night, Your issue is more psychological than physical. P

There are degrees of severity for venous leaks. If you're getting morning wood and are able to maintain an erection for at least a few minutes it's likely your VL isn't too severe. There's also many instances where mild physical issues are often made worse due to performance anxiety or stress.

Morning wood is not indicative of physical ed. Some people (myself included) just don't get it. Then again, daily fapping (which I am trying to cut out) may also prevent morning wood.
I have gone 2 weeks without fapping and got them, but that was like 2 years ago. Now I can go 2 weeks of nofap and probably still wont get one. I'm a week into it but I ejaculated yesterday. I'll go another week and see what happens.

I had total ED for 3 weeks, and it was psychological. Your mind is powerful enough to take away even your morning erections.

I was cleared by a urologist for venous leaks, corporal fibrosis, and peyronies. My erections returned when my happiness did

The point is that ED can be psychological and/or physical, but that morning wood or no morning wood isn't an effective way to distinguish the different causes as many have assumed.

I agree with you 100%, dicklimppen. ED's cause can be psychological and/or physical in nature. In fact, in instances of physical ED, there is usually a compounding psychological component.

Very strong morning wood and/or very strong nocturnal erections can help rule out some physical causes - but not all. The reverse is actually more true.

Weak morning or nocturnal erections is actually a good sign that there's likely a physical problem. In those instances, it's important to see a doctor right away, because your penis is an excellent barometer of your overall health. Weak spontaneous erections can be a sign of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or a variety of other significant medical problems.

The presence of morning wood is indicative of some level of (physical) functionality, and if the morning wood is full and persistent, it should indicate a high level of functionality. This is barring any odd sort of injury like nerve impingement or a loss of sensitivity.

Another factor is how sometimes guys talk about having a much harder time getting an erection in certain positions after an injury, or with erectile dysfunction generally, especially, for instance, when standing up. In these cases, morning wood wouldn't be indicative of erectile quality in other positions where achieving and maintaining erections was more difficult.

Morning wood is used as an indicator that you are probably fine. It's lack doesn't indicate that it is physical, because for me mood affects my morning wood.

But there are people without ED that don't get morning wood.

How did you find this out?
It was in a medical journal, that I can't post a link to on this forum. But you can google the title and I think the administrators won't be upset with that:
