edit: thanks to the Mod/Admin whoever changed my topic into a better phrase.
----------------

I'm looking into buying an LG Hanger. The hanger itself doesn't come cheap, but it seems to be a quality product, and support level is high. The system is unique, and development must be paid for. That part I understand.

Now regarding the LG weights, I have some thoughts:
  • There are two weight packs, both seem a bit steeply priced weight/dollar wise.
  • Shipping to Europe adds another USD 50, on top of that add 20% for VAT and an extra surcharge by customs.

I have a question to those who have experience using hanging devices: are there any good alternatives for the proprietary LG weights, or are they good value for money in the end? It is just the weights I'm looking to find an alternative for.

My first thoughts are: I can get iron cast barbel disc weights and a nice 6 ft steel cable for a lot less. The cable I can probably wrap a couple of times thus ending up with a usable length. Shipping would be free as I get it in my home country. I've also seen PVC plastic covered concrete barbel disc weights. Not sure if that would be a better choice than cast iron.

Please advise,

Goku

edit: I should have made the title: "Need advice: are the LG weights worth the price - including shipping to Europe". If possible, could an Admin or Mod please change this for me? TIA

You can do as you have suggested, find some pig iron barbell weight and buy some steel cable to loop it all together with. What you use for an attachment to keep the weight from sliding off the cable is up to you.
The pig iron weight only comes weight increments of 2 1/2 lbs, 5 lbs, 10 lbs & 25 lb plates. However anything heavier than a 5 lb plate has a very large diameter.

Cost is only part of the equation....
The weight that is used for the LG Hanger is only 3" in diameter. It has a 5/16" hole drilled thru the center of each slug, so you can thread the cable thru the center of the slug and add or remove weight quickly and efficiently as the custom machined cable clamp attaches to the cable by tightening two appliance knobs. The weight increments offer more flexibility with poundage .... 2 lb., 3 lb., 5 lb. & 10 lb. They are also balanced and you can easily hang 12 lbs and walk around without the weight banging into your knees and shins, which is not the case with the pig iron option. So bottom line is not just cost, but also how user friendly is the alternative?

When shipping internationally we always list value of item at no more than $50 so that VAT for any particular country will remain small.

Hi Marlon,

Thanks for answering. I see your point about convenience. Mobility is not on top of my mind regarding hanging, but I can imagine that the barbell weight restricts mobility. That could indeed be inconvenient.

Which raises another question: is the mass volume density of the LG slugs much different from cast iron? Like in would your 5lb slug be for example half the size of a barbell weight?

TIA

The weight I used is a solid cold roll steel, so the material is much more dense in size versus a cast material that is porous. I'm not a metallurgist so I couldn't give you a percentage of difference. But for reference sake, our 2 lb weight is 1.100" thick (27.94 mm) and 3" in diameter, the 3 lb is 1 .562" or 1 9/16" thick (39.67 mm), the 5 lb weight is 2.625" or 2 5/8" (66.67 mm) and the 10 lb weight is 5.125" or 5 1/8" long (130.17 mm).

You can take a look at both Cable Weight Systems at our website - Products - LG Hanger

Ok thanks. Do you use Stainless Steel? I will google the mass density and compare.

Can I perhaps avoid the shipping cost altogether? Your site mentions free shipping when the order surpasses a certain amount. Which I will not voice in my post, as my wallet is listening :D.

I'm going to be buying the weight setup soon but I'm also from the state. Before you use weight lifting weights wich are big and bulky try and buy some heavy chains. Put them on a scale and cut the weight your looking for. Length will equal your weight and not bulky. And if it swings to much slide a hose over it..just another idea..

Years ago I used to use open end wrenches when I worked on my truck or motorcycle. Then I graduated to a ratchet. Now I use a pneumatic air gun. For me it's all about time and convenience.

Hi Rippem,

Which set will you be buying, the 10lb or 20lb? Or both perhaps?

I will think about the chain option. I'm not really good with tools though. But then again, I can buy different lengths of chain and have the shop cut them for me. It is not as if my dick will be able to tell the difference if the weight is not exactly calibrated/weighted. As long as I can add chain or take some away...

Convenience is a valid point though.

I'll first buy the 10lb set then graduate to the 20..the chain can be usually cut from the hardware store were you buy it free of charge. It can be bought in lengths and thickness.have them cut a 6" price first take it home and weigh it, that way you have a base to start from Then you can just open the clip and slip the chain on instead of rigging something for the weight lifting weight..and as you go just ad another chain..I can tell you this if you don't have his hanger yet and are thinking about buying it you won't be disappointed. That's why I'm gonna buy his weights, he does quality work with quality materials..

Hi Marlon, I wouldn't want to come across hasty, but my questions got isolated a bit by the follow-up posts. Do you think you could look at these two questions a bit? TIA.

Stainless steel is very expensive in comparison to mild carbon steel. It is also much harder to machine. I do everything I can to keep costs down. There isn't a significant difference in the size of a 5 lb slug of stainless steel vs a 5 lb slug of mild carbon steel. I sand and paint all my weights, so there is no need to worry about rust.
