I'm frankly surprised at how much emphasis I see on BMI since it has been shown to be deeply flawed and inaccurate for certain body types and level of athleticism. Here's a nice article on the public library of science blog:

Why the Body Mass Index (BMI) is a Poor Measure of Your Health | Obesity Panacea

edit: heretohelp, I haven't seen you but it seems what you say about yourself is true and many here who I guess have seen you confirm it. Just ignore the nonsense, you know you are better than fine :)

Whatever measurements make you the happiest! /smooth operator.

Apologies for the emphasis on stats and figures Steneo; I was just being a grumpy she-hulk since I was being questioned aesthetically. There's certainly flaws with the BMI that are especially evident in the very muscular. It's being pushed quite a bit by the NHS at the moment which is why I used that particular calculator. I frequently can't trust my own eyes to judge where I'm up too physically so I deal with numbers a lot of the time.

Thankyou for the sound advice. I guess I should mention that the three examples of bodyshape are actually me (you can tell because I'm the only member here with no head, rather unfortunate accident that!).

I wanna seeeeee *nosy*.

'It is now well established that individuals who deposit much of their body weight around their midsection, the so called apple-shaped, are at much greater risk of disease and early mortality in contrast to the so called pear-shaped, who carry their weight more peripherally, particularly in the lower body.'

On the plus side, I'm going to live forever.

I don't want to interfere with this conversations flow, but there is something I need to say.

Only a superficial person would criticize another persons body/looks, it would also make for an AH to make healthy good looking people feel bad about their perfectly fine bodies/selves out of pure ignorance and personal insecurities.

In my book, all body shapes and sizes are just fine, I know its a sensitive subject for most, and I know a person in real life who's very insecure about her body image, picking the slightest imperfections and refer to them like deformities, no thanks to society, all I can say, please focus on your health and well being, you are not a set of numbers and ratios, you are fine, get healthier, if someone doesn't see you in a good way, their loss, find someone better, for you.

BigO is right, BMI can make fit people look fat or fat people look fit.

Umm...hello...Anon and TPW...we all know that the only attractive size for a woman, regardless of height or bone structure is size 00. Seriously, you had to ask? :bangin:

And now...:bolt:

I'd be interested to see the difference between the number of male and female body dysmorphic disorder sufferers. I wonder if the different kind of pressures put on the sexes can result in the same problems?

This is a very astute question I think. I'd bet it is more common in men than is generally believed. Let's face it, we can't all be ripped, tall, dark, handsome, rich, hung, etc, etc, etc...

Personally, I fight this in myself because I'm pretty tall and skinny. Skinny for men is bad. No matter how many times I tried to gain muscle I never got any bigger. So I get called skinny, boney, beanpole, etc... Not fun.
