To stop, he wold have had to agree to never try to join NATO. As a fledgling democracy bordering autocratic states, Ukraine needed the protection of NATO.

Depends on the perspective.

From the point of view Ukraine, it makes sense to have NATO at your back as an insurance policy against Russian aggression.

From the point of view Russia/Putin, Ukraine's ascension into NATO can be seen as an US/NATO encroachment into its borders. So from this viewpoint, a NATO alliance can be construed as a provocation.

It all depends on the perspective. Which is why, I cannot stress enough, more should have been done to negotiate this peacefully.

Depends on the perspective.
.

From my perspective - living through the Cold War of the 50s - 80s and being taught in school how to duck and take cover in case of a nuclear attack, Russia has always been the bitter enemy of the U.S. and for anyone thinking that Russia has any kind of legitimate reason to attack an independent state is anathema and anyone making an excuse supporting such a move is totally un-American. But that is how I was brought up - my perspective.

I came across this I don't know if it has any veracity (comments)

Quote
The Ukrainian military had a defense in depth planned from the border with Belarus to Kyiv. By the time the "spearpoint" of tanks and armor personnel carriers arrived outside the city they had been weakened to the point they could not continue the attack into the city. The front line of Russian troops is under attack and they are holding ground, but Ukrainian military attacks along their supply line back to Belarus have cut off supplies moving to the Russians on the front.

I see many western govts are semding support to U including weapons . Might be difficult to get them in the country though .
Surprising how U has managed to keep some anti air capibility , they even retain some airforce which is just a mind boggle . They even claim a new euro ace which in the circumstane beggars belief ( the "Ghost" of Kyiv )

Fighting to keep one's liberty and freedom has been chronicled in the worlds history a few times. It is very empowering to those involved and to those giving support. It may inspire Russian citizens in the future. I would not care to see their effort fail. Live free or die. Grow a pair if need be.

So Russian nuclear forces have been put on special alert! I guess Putin doesn't want to be around anymore. Rich Russians and generals won't go for that sh*t.

Putin claims it was the nuclear defense system, but we all know how much Putin can be trusted.

Putin believes NATO and the U.S. are one and the same. I heard this morning that Putin has taken the dispute into space. He reminded the U.S. that Russia maintains control input into the propulsion system of the International Space Station and that the Station’s orbit travels over the U.S and not Russia. Sounds like a veiled threat.

Doesn't sound so veiled to me.

This is going to get pretty bad before it gets better.

The E.U. announces it will stiffen up sanctions, bank control and will also be blocking all Russian state media.

Don't worry folks, I am sure the media we will be given will be truthful and non biased

I'm not sure I would trust that clip. No follow up comments from the opposition. Just a clip of one person making a comment.

all the mediabwill be giving us is "Russia bad"

I believe in Putin’s mind he wants to return to the former Soviet empire; however, he publicly said on Tuesday that Russia respected the sovereignty of other ex-Soviet republics and that Moscow had made an exception with Ukraine because he said it was under foreign control, the TASS news agency reported. He also previously said he had no intention to invade Ukraine. I personally do not have much faith in anything Putin says. In Putin’s world, foreign control includes administrations democratically voted in by 90% of the people.
