OK I tried not to but BigRooster is correct. The war was fought for two main reasons. Close to 75% of the Gross Domestic Product of the USA was being produced in the southern states. Lincoln's second biggest agenda item in fighting this war was states rights to self governance or federal rule of governance. The issue of whether the republic would rule or individual states would have more authority. This fight continues today. Our two main political parties are the Republican and the Democratic. In history there was a pretty clear division between these two parties, and you had a fairly good idea of what you would get if you voted for a candidate of one party or the other. This division is no longer true.
Money rules the day, and corruption wanders the halls of leadership. The above mentioned war was an extreme example of this former division. Slavery was not even an actual issue in regards to the war. There are quotes by Lincoln proclaiming those very things.
History is written by the victors, and that issue has become more and more an expressed sole reason for the war. Mostly since the 1940's forward. Our country was founded by a rebel yell and declaration that we luckily were strong enough to make stick at the time. The southern states were not strong enough to make that rebel yell stick. The problems in politics will continue and falsehoods will continue to be bandied about depending on the corporate mood and belief. Hate should not be tolerated no matter what justification is used. Unfortunately that will continue also.
Jefferson Davies was the President of the southern states, not a founding father.
