It depends on what you mean by average. I think most research equate "average" with either mean or median, depending on whether the data is normal or skewed.
We can also define "average" as Mean +- 1s (where s is the sample standard deviation), in which case, 68% of the observation would be considered average. We can also say that the middle 50% of the data is average (this is called the interquartile range). There is no universal way of determining what average means.

Terms are there for a purpose: to affix an idea firmly onto the label. Thereafter, simply using the label evokes the whole idea. Suppose I say "the movement of water molecules from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration." What word does that remind you of?

Heuristic: a rule of thumb we use in the absence of necessary information.
Availability Heuristic: a rule of thumb in which we believe something is more likely to happen based on how easily we can recall an example of what has happened. For example, if you slept with five girls and you are about to sleep with the sixth, and you have never given an orgasm to any of those five girls, you are more likely to believe that you can't give the sixth girl orgasm. Some people go too far and believe "girls don't orgasm."
I said he might have committed this because when he said "many girls said they can't handle...", "many" might have referred to 3-4 girls he talked to, which is far from representative of the female population.
Availability cascade: With this heuristic, we believe something is true when many people around us adopt the belief. Perhaps two girls told their girlfriends that they can't handle 6" girths. Some of their girlfriends then somehow convince themselves they can't handle it too. Then when they have the opportunity to try it, they look for clues to prove that their observation is correct (confirmation bias -- another heuristic) and disregard clues that would prove them wrong.
Then they spread the word, and more girlfriends try it and confirm the observation. Then an interviewer, thatnewnew, came along and ask them about this. That could be how he came to conclude that girls can't handle 6" girths.
