An Australian man killed during fighting in eastern Ukraine has been hailed as a hero by Ukraine's ambassador to Australia.

Key points:

  • Jed Danahay was killed in eastern Ukraine while serving as a combat medic
  • Ukraine's ambassador to Australia has described Mr Danahay as a hero
  • The federal government is proving consular assistance to Mr Danahay's family

Jed William Danahay, 27, from Nanango in southern Queensland was killed in the town of Izyum on August 24 while working as a combat medic.

A family spokesperson said at the time of his death, Mr Danahay was driving a medical vehicle which was targeted by Russian forces.

The winners of the recent surge in energy prices have been fossil fuel companies — and Australia's gas giants are no exception.

Prices for Australian liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports have more than doubled from around $7.5 a gigajoule in 2020-21 to $16 a gigajoule in 2021-22.

A recent report by think tank, The Australia Institute, concluded Australian LNG producers have generated an extra $40 billion in revenue compared with the previous year, due to the recent uptick in energy prices.

But in the longer term, Dr Holland said it was possible Russia shifting its gas supply towards Asian markets could disadvantage Australian companies.

Two-way trade between Australia and India was worth $27.5 billion last year, miniscule when compared with the $251 billion traded between Australia and China. And yet that gap only serves to illustrate the huge opportunity seized this week when the Australian Parliament passed a new trade deal with India

A mass shooting in my state has attracted a lot of attention since it is rare ,
So it appears a small group of US style conspiracy theorists ambushed police making enquiries about a missing person.
Killing 2 of them and then a neighbour who came to investigate . Swat then flew in on a heli and killed the 3 perps in a gunbattle

Bilateral ties. Hot on the heels of Foreign Minister Penny Wong’s trip to Beijing to meet her counterpart Wang Yi, Chinese President Xi Jinping exchanged congratulatory messages with Anthony Albanese, marking 50 years of diplomatic relations. Wong says she raised the cases of two Australians held in China, Cheng Lei and Yang Hengjun, during her visit.

“It’s not just gas exporters who have been reaping the benefit of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,” Dr Richard Denniss, executive director at leading public policy think tank The Australia Institute, says.

“This research shows that while Australian consumers have been hit with surging prices for energy, coal companies have been making windfall profits from exporting Australian coal.

“Combined, the gas and coal export industries have banked up to $85B in windfall profits in 2021-22.”

The trade war with Cina continues . Aussie minister Penny Wong and others have done missions there trying to resolve it . The Chinese seem to have been surprised we did not buckle to their demands and seem to be walking it back .

Very admirable for your country. We cave to China before they even ask us to.

The US and Aussie both have trade issues with China but at base the problems are different and so are the desired outcomes.
There are positive signs re Aussie/China my understanding of the US/china is limited
