ABC thumbs its nose at News Corp and Acma with rerun of Fox and the Big Lie

Revamped Sarah Ferguson documentary to air on Four Corners after initial version sparked complaints. Plus: the Australian’s own goal
Fri 21 Apr 2023 14.27 AEST

Hours before Lachlan Murdoch dropped his defamation case against Crikey, the ABC dropped its own reaction to Fox News and Dominion reaching a $787.5m settlement over US election lies.
In a move which could be interpreted as the public broadcaster thumbing its nose at News Corporation and the local media watchdog, Four Corners will re-broadcast Sarah Ferguson’s spicy documentary Fox and the Big Lie on Monday.

“Fox will no longer be scrutinised through a trial, so this is the complete story,” the ABC said.

This is a bold move because the two-part doco infuriated News Corp Australia and Fox News, and triggered an unprecedented 45 articles in local papers. The Australian called it a “full-frontal hit job on Rupert Murdoch, News Corp and the US Fox News channel”.

When the ABC didn’t budge, Fox took its lengthy complaint to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (Acma).
Acma said it breached the accuracy and fair dealing requirements of the ABC’s editorial code, but did not violate impartiality standards.
The 7.30 host responded with a furious 1,200-word piece published by the ABC, saying that she “expected the Fox Corporation to complain loudly about our coverage. I did not expect ACMA to respond in the terms it did”.
One of Acma’s more dubious findings was that using the word “mob” to describe the 6 January rioters was emotive and strident language.
Asked whether the program would include the elements Acma said breached editorial standards, the ABC said the two-part program had been edited and updated.
“Fox and the Big Lie has been edited to be a standalone program and updated to include the latest developments,” a spokesperson said. “It abides by the highest editorial standards.”
Fox and the Big Lie goes to air on Monday 24th April at 8.30pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.

Lachlan Murdoch has dropped his defamation proceedings against the independent Australian media company Private Media, the publisher of Crikey.

Murdoch launched defamation proceedings in August against the independent news site over an article published in June that named the Murdoch family as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in the US Capitol attack. The CEO of the small publisher hailed the news on Friday as a “victory for free speech”.

Australia has been called "the defamation capital of the world" by legal experts, due to strict local laws which allow only limited defences for defamation.
Crikey - which launched in 2000 and employs 10 full-time journalists - had planned to argue its opinion piece was contextually true, and in the public interest.
In court documents outlining its defence, it argued Mr Murdoch was morally and ethically culpable for the Capitol riot because Fox News, under his control and management, knowingly promoted false claims the election was stolen.
In a statement on Friday, publisher Private Media said the Dominion settlement earlier this week proved their case. Fox News made a last-minute $787.5m (£634m) payout to the machine company, avoiding a defamation trial.
Crikey's publisher said it had won against the media billionaire.

"We stand by our position that Lachlan Murdoch was culpable in promoting the lie of the 2020 election result."

The judge in the case quite rightly stated the Crikey was driven by idelogy.
In part Criley have stated Quote

“Lachlan Murdoch’s unethical and reprehensible conduct in allowing Fox News to promote and peddle Trump’s lie of the stolen election, despite Lachlan Murdoch knowing it was false, makes him morally and ethically culpable for the illegal January 6 attack.”

Austrralia was early out of the gate with support for Ukaraine . While support has continued (latest is drones and arty shells ) it has slowed .
Part of the reomlem is the Australian army does not have equipment for a euro central front type conflict . Few tanks or ifv like say Marder or Bradley . Sure our Bushmaster is a great vehicle but it is more intended for Afghan type operations .

A view from New Zealand .
Quote
In recent years, China’s leader, Xi Jinping, has made clear that China’s “national rejuvenation” cannot be achieved without “reunification” with Taiwan. The present situation, he has said, “cannot go on [from] generation to generation”.

Since 2020, New Zealand’s sole alliance partner Australia has borne the brunt of a coercive economic and diplomatic sanctions policy initiated by China. Canberra responded with the ambitious 2021 AUKUS initiative, a strategic technology-sharing partnership with the US and UK.

China then escalated tensions by signing a security agreement with the Solomon Islands in May 2022. The operational details weren’t transparent but the strategic target was clear – Australia.

These developments profoundly affect New Zealand’s own security. This explains Minister of Defence Andrew Little’s announcement in April 2023 that Wellington is interested in hearing more detail about possible “pillar two” participation in AUKUS.

One necessary casualty of the current era of conflict escalation is a worldview based on plentiful security and few hard choices. How far we have come from the benign era when New Zealand signed a free trade agreement with China in 2008.

Ya I kinda wonder. Australia has had the luxury of getting, or not getting involved in many conflicts. The Ukes and U.S. certainly appreciate the help. But that help goes to a conflict in another hemisphere, thousands of miles away. Not likely Putin will pay much attention to the Aussies if the sh*t hits the fan. And I expect if Putin made threats against Australia, public support would dwindle. Hope I’m wrong. But the more looming threat in the South Pacific is China.

Do you think the world would rally to save a democracy ( Taiwan) like they're doing for Ukraine? I don't think the world would do a thing. They'll just say it was always part of China except for the last 70 years when it was a democracy.

Wow just wow .
First guys just read post 826 directly above your comments . At least the NZ knows it's history some of it very recent .
Australia has paid a heavy recent price for it's support of the US /Taiwan over issues in the Soth China seas and other issues .
I quote from post 826 which should clearly give the concept .

The AUKUS is one of a series of alliances Aussie has which has involved it in any number of issues and wars . This started with ww1 (from the start) I don't count Boer war as we were in that before and during the formation of Aussie as a country . In any case it has continued to this day and included conflict all over the world WW2 ,vietnam ,Korea more recently Iraq and so on .
Umm guys Australians in general find it deeply disapointing the lack of recognition they get for supporting their allies .

The European Union has failed to offer Australia satisfactory terms to seal a free-trade accord, Trade Minister Don Farrell said, as small but important sticking points threaten to derail plans to sign by the end of August.

EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis said Wednesday evening in Brussels that it’s possible the agreement could be signed at a NATO summit in Lithuania in mid-July, the Australian Financial Review reported. The five-year negotiations between the bloc and Canberra are in their “end-game,” he told reporters, adding there is still “certain ground to be covered.”

Australia remains dissatisfied with the level of market access being offered for agricultural products and isn’t prepared to sign a deal without “meaningful commercial market access,” Farrell said Thursday in a statement. “At this stage we haven’t had a good enough offer from the Europeans,” he said.

Behind the scenes, European negotiators believe the FTA could be agreed in coming weeks if differences over the last major sticking point — market access for Australian beef — are bridged, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.

But Australia is signaling it’s unhappy with the access on offer across a range of agricultural products, including beef, sugar and mutton. It needs to decide then whether to take what’s on the table or walk away.

Australia is believed to want a deal similar to the FTA struck between the EU and Canada in 2014.

There are also disagreements over the EU’s insistence on geographical indication protection for hundreds of products that could affect the branding of Australia’s exports such as prosecco and feta. EU negotiators consider these to be non-negotiables while Farrell has previously said it was an “emotional issue” for Australian farmers.

Resolving these are likely to be easier if the key issue of beef is resolved.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will attend the NATO summit in Vilnius starting July 11, while Farrell may return to the EU for further negotiations in early July, both potential opportunities to further or finalize the trade agreement.

With firearms requiring a licence criminals tend to use knives ,machete etc for many crimes .
A recent home invasion turned into a mele when the invaders armed with machete and knives faced off with home owners armed with shovels . Injuries all round and several guys "helping police with enquiry" . It sometimes happens that a home invader armed with a knife confronts a owner with a rifle .

Rheinmetall Defence Australia has delivered the first 25 Boxer CRVs (known as Block I vehicles) to Defence. The Block I vehicles were built and assembled primarily in Germany and underwent final integration and acceptance testing in Australia.

With a deliberate period of transition, the remaining Boxer CRVs (known as Block II vehicles) will be built and assembled in Australia, under a gradual ramp down in Germany and ramp up in Australia. This will enable progressive technology transfer of the manufacturing techniques and assembly line processes to Australia during this period.

News Corp profits dive 75% as Rupert Murdoch-owned company hints at AI future

Poor result weighed down by lower print and digital advertising at News Corp Australia, a division that includes flagship newspaper The Australian

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation has recorded a steep 75% drop in full-year profit but sees opportunities ahead as it expands the use of cost-saving AI-produced content.
The US-listed media conglomerate – which owns mastheads in the US, UK and Australia, along with book publishers, subscription television and real estate advertising assets – recorded $US187m ($A287m) in net profit for the financial year, down from the previous year’s $US760m record.

I know this isn't particularly Aussie but I like it
Quote
About 20 years ago Modern Library was smart to ask Ursula K. Le Guin to edit and write introductions for some H.G. Wells books. From the Selected Stories: "For the last couple of centuries, people who live more than thirty years or so have been likely to realize, suddenly or gradually, that they are strangers in a changed, incomprehensible world: lands of exile for refugees, cities of ruin for those whose nation suffers war, a labyrinth of high technology in which the untrained mind strays bewildered, a world of huge wealth which the poor stare at through the impenetrable glass of a shop window or a TV set . . . . From the early nineteenth century on, the stable, single worlds of pre-industrial societies were broken down and drawn into a multiverse of constantly increasing variety and change." This explains cranky old duffers -- I am twice over a stranger in this world.
