Because of it's mortality rate for the mother and their attitude on being against abortion 100%. Mississippi came insanely close to passing a law recently that would make all forms of abortion illegal, even in cases of Ectopic pregnancies. People are clearly insane enough to try and make it law to force the death upon a woman with a serious medical condition because of their extreme pro-life views, so this topic is extremely relevant to this discussion.

Thanks for the info. I had no idea about the proposed Mississippi law. That is pretty extreme. My wife's first pregnancy was ectopic and was in excruciating pain. There was nothing to say to the doctors except to make the pain stop. For them to tell me Sorry, it's against the law would make me go ballistic.

yes this is true, everything says that is the way it should be, and i can honestly say i wish i agreed. However, if i am standing in lets say, the kitchen, and the woman pregnant with my baby stands there, looks me in the eyes and tells me she is gonna kill it, I think i may have a hard time respecting her wishes. being a noble, sociologically acceptable male comes second to my childs future.

Since we are delving into hypothetical situations, lets use your example and add to that she also found out that she is HIV positive and well so is the fetus that she is gonna "kill" (as you put it for negative effect) .. Would you still have a hard time respecting her wishes?

Afterall this baby is gonna be born, and get a pass straight to death row . Yes theres meds for HIV, but you get where im going with this.. Odds are his/her life is limited to 15 +/- 5 years..

Now let's add to the hypo that it is 7-8 months into the pregnancy and we live in syphonville where even partial birth abortions are legal. So does the baby get the axe or what?

Getting a little extreme and defensive here, but I will match your hypo and add to it. She was gangraped and became prego from this grotesque and traumatizing incident, and has been totally torn since this traumatizing experience. And now this, she has HIV. I would totally stand by her side with this abortion.

This is what the progressive liberal republic of syphonville grants its loyal citizens freedom of choice with no intervention from religious extremists or no choicers :p..

Ultimately I say the choice should be left to the person, and not by legislation from the gov. whos only agenda is to get funds for there next re-election from lobbyists..

I suppose the issue with your hypo is that she was carrying around this baby for 7-8 months - why didn't she get it sucked out immediately, which I'd have been cool with. Rape victims probably should, upon inspection at the hospital, be offered with drugs to ensure that a pregnancy does not result. They might even be as the law is in most cases - I am not sure.

In general, and not to get all philosophical and sh*t, but our actions should generally be to maximize good and minimize bad, all factors considered. It would seem that killing the baby at this point, 7 to 8 months in, does more harm than good. Just my opinion though. Maybe she was all traumatized and in no condition to make the decision, but is that grounds for permitting termination of the fetus at this late date? I'm not so convinced...

Yeah, it was pretty extreme. Thankfully it was shot down. Not only did the proposed bill include forcing Ectopic pregnancies to be carried to term, but it was going to outlaw most forms of birth control as well.

A tl;dr of Proposition 26 basically said that upon fertilization of the egg, it's considered a living human being and termination of the pregnancy by any means is constituted as murder...ironically leaving the person available to receive the death penalty.

Some people take this whole anti-abortion/pro-life stuff way too seriously.

Now let's add to the hypo that it is 7-8 months into the pregnancy and we live in syphonville where even partial birth abortions are legal. So does the baby get the axe or what?
In my opinion, that's too far into the pregnancy to just up and have an abortion unless there's medical issues, but if a woman can or cannot get one is not up to me to decide.

"In my opinion, that's too far into the pregnancy to just up and have an abortion"

what does how far into pregnancy have to do with the issue? I really don't understand how there can be some magical date at which point the fetus is a human. This brings me back to the "now that i've made it I'm Pro-choice" shirt. The distinctions people make up are either arbitrary or guilt based

There is no magical date. Try reading the rest of that sentence to understand it rather than chopping up what I wrote. Also, please don't try to group me in with your shirt thing. If I was aborted, it's not like I'd be around to give a rats ass.

I guess I'm pro-choice but I really am not all that concerned. From an economic standpoint it makes sense to have an abortion, and this and a few other small things make me pro-choice. It's just that I think it's hypocritical to act as if the baby is now to old to abort after one day. At some point people have to admit that by aborting they really hold no respect for human life and are making a selfish decision. Don't get me wrong though I would make that "selfish decision" if I were put in such a position. I make selfish decisions everyday if I truly cared about human life I would give up my possessions and sacrifice everything I had so many more people could be fed. Unfortunately I don't do this and won't do this along with millions of other people. It's not as if I don't give to charity and give my time in food shelters I just don't act like that's enough to make a big difference or as if that is all I could do.

After 28 weeks a fetus has a greater chance of living outside the womb. . . at 7-8 mos of pregancy they would not be able to do an abortion the baby would be delivered. I believe partial birth abortions can only be done from 3 mos to 6 mos. How far into a pregnancy has everything to do with an abortion. At 5 weeks gestation a baby has a heartbeat. . . the fetus is human but as far as when a fetus should be considered a living being is another debate.

demone your a joke because you dont read what people post, you dismiss very valid points and are to busy expressing your opinion to realize you might actually be agreeing with someone, like in this thread with the rate of occurrence. I dont care enough to report you, and I dont want to be a mod, but if your a mod I think anyone capable of copy and paste could be a mod.

As for the hypothetical situation involving the gang-rape and the hiv, no abortion. Death sentence or not any life is better then no-life, unless you believe in an afterlife and you cant throw that belief on another human being, so the hiv wouldn't be a factor. If the woman is traumatized from the gang-rape you have to take into consideration the fact that she may not be suitable for that kind of decision making, and I am gonna have to say it dosnt matter when you kill the baby, any argument there is a rationalization to free up ones conscious

I am against abortion. If someone is willing to have sex then they should be just as willing to deal with the consequences that may come with it. If they really don't want the child then I'm sure there are people out there who don't even have the ability to make a child of their own that would be more than happy to give the baby a good life. Now that I think about it, someone getting an abortion just because they weren't careful is kinda like spitting in the faces of all those who have tried to make a child and find out it's impossible for them to do so.

Obviously, I don't think anybody gets raped willingly therefor, like many have already said, there should be an option of abortion for rape victims.

But that's not how adoption works, if it was then great but it's not that simple.

I don't think there is anything wrong with getting an abortion, everyone make mistakes. If someone gets pregnant who doesn't want a child or is incapable of looking after a child they shouldn't have to. If someone if getting abortions on a regular basis as a form of contraception they should be sterilized.

make it so people are incapable of procreation without a medical procedure. once people are ready and willing to have a child they can go be tested to make sure they are fit to have children. would eliminate every problem discussed here as well as many others.

And who determines who's fit to have children? The gov't?

And who is going to pay for all of that, when will it be done, and what will be done?

Dont hate on the government, its just an idea. Hate on the people in government, who I agree is unfit to make the call, and fixing that would definitely have to be done before anything could be done about abortion.

Demone, how about the people who currently pay for welfare for starters? The economic advantages to regulating procreation is one of its best arguments.
The answer to "when" is never because it cant work in a democratic society and without democracy politicians cant obtain power through manipulation of the masses and would be forced to produce actual results.
