You won’t find any junk food in the legendary fountain of youth. New research has linked a diet low in processed foods to a slower aging process. A study of nearly 2,000 individuals published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that the more wholesome their diet was, the more slowly they aged.

DASH diet linked to slower aging process
Published in June 2021, the study measured how closely participants adhered to the DASH diet, while also looking at how quickly their biological ages advanced over a 10-year time period. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, and it is a largely plant-based diet that emphasizes whole foods and discourages the intake of processed foods.
While the goal of DASH is to fend off high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases, evidence suggests it also helps protect against kidney and liver diseases, cancer, osteoarthritis, gout, metabolic syndrome, obesity, and other disorders—so these new findings may not be surprising to advocates of DASH.
Measuring the rate of aging
How did researchers determine that study participants who adhered to a DASH diet aged at a slower rate? They looked at how methylation affected the subjects’ DNA.
Our genes are composed of DNA, which is a molecule that provides the instructions needed for our development, survival and reproduction. DNA methylation occurs when a methyl group consisting of carbon and hydrogen is added to certain parts of DNA, which can affect gene function and expression. During aging, some DNA regions become overmethylated while others are undermethylated.
“Diet-associated differential DNA methylation can be linked to metabolic and inflammatory pathways, which indicates the importance of diet-induced epigenetic changes on health outcomes,” the study authors remarked. Epigenetics is the science of the processes that help determine when genes are turned on or off, without altering the genes themselves.
This study isn’t the first time DNA methylation status has been used to predict life span. Other studies have linked it to disease progression and death. Ultimately, this measurement can help you understand your biologic age, which, depending upon how healthy your lifestyle is, might be younger or older than your chronologic age.
Why your chronologic age is less important than your biologic age
Chronologic age refers to the number of years someone has lived, whereas biologic age provides a more accurate estimation of a person’s age based on the measurement of various markers. As an example, someone who smokes, rarely exercises, is overweight and has bad eating habits may be determined to be biologically “older” than their chronologic age and runs the risk of failing to attain the average human life span.
This new study suggests that diet is an especially important factor when it comes to staying biologically youthful, no matter the date of birth on your driver’s license.
What foods should you avoid to stay biologically young?
Adhering to the DASH diet naturally limits your consumption of processed foods, which are, as the name implies, foods that have been processed in ways that change them from their natural state.
While foods that are minimally processed, such as chopped, roasted, canned or frozen foods may still be nutritious, heavily processed foods provide less in the way of beneficial nutrients and more saturated fat, sugar, salt and other unhealthy ingredients.
People looking to extend their lives have a particular interest in sugar and aging, but what does the science actually say?

In a lot of diets, from the Mediterranean diet to the low-carb diet, all uniformly advocated for removing processed foods and refined sugar.
But mechanistically, why is sugar a problem? Does sugar contribute to aging? Are there nuances to the sugar-is-always-bad narrative?
In this article, I aim to answer all these questions. But first, I want to address a larger question: why is sugar talked so much in relation to health, nutrition, and aging?
Why is sugar a focus?
Humans are hardwired to love sweet foods.
You might meet the occasional adult who claims to hate sugar, but you’ve likely never met a kid who turned their nose up at a sweet. In fact, there’s a general consensus that sugar preferences in children are not a byproduct of advertising or food manufacturing, but of biological desires. A review published in the journal Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care explains, “Heightened preference for sweet-tasting foods and beverages during childhood is universal and evident among infants and children around the world.”
While “too sweet” is a concept adults are familiar with (they tend to max out at about what you’d get in a 20 oz Gatorade), there is no known upper limit to how much sweetness—sugar, by extension—kids like.
“Sugar” is shorthand for “simple carbohydrates.” There are two natural categories of sugars:
Monosaccharides: Simple carbs with a single sugar molecule. Glucose, fructose, and galactose are monosaccharides.
Disaccharides: Simple carbs with two sugar molecules joined together.
There are only three disaccharides that are naturally occurring. Sucrose, which you can find in table sugar, honey, and dates, is a combination of glucose and fructose. Lactose, or the combination of glucose and galactose, is natural milk-derived sugar, found in cream, butter, and human breast milk. Finally, there’s maltose, which has two bonded glucose molecules, which is found in germinating grains. Foods with maltose include beer and bread.
(Other sweeteners, like high fructose corn syrup, are man-made disaccharides [any of a class of sugars whose molecules contain two monosaccharide residues].)
Carbohydrates, regardless of if they’re simple or complex carbs, are used for four functions in the human body. As this is an incredibly dense topic, please use the links provided for further reading if you’re interested.
Producing energy: Most human cells prefer or require carbohydrates to produce energy and work as they’re supposed to.
Energy storage: Carbohydrates that aren’t immediately used are stored as glycogen.
Building macromolecules: Carbohydrates are used to make ribose and deoxyribose, the foundations of macromolecules like DNA and RNA.
Preserving fat and protein:Blood glucose spares the body from having to use fat and protein as the body’s main source of energy.
In other words, carbohydrates are an essential part of a functioning human body. Because simple carbs have a shorter chain of molecules, they’re easier to digest in the body. Over email, Julie Olson, BSc., CN, BCHN, CGP, of Fortitude Functional Nutrition, elaborates: “Carbohydrates are a main source of energy, converted by the body to power our cells. We need some sugar for some brain cells, some kidney cells, red blood cells, and testes cells” to function properly.
Simple carbs are a subject of conversation in nutritional circles because humans generally rely on carbohydrates to function, and humans particularly like sugar and its sweetness.
Unfortunately, our preference for sweets has led to an excess of added sugar in the Western diet.
Added sugar versus natural sugars
When I say “added sugar,” I mean simple carbs that have been mixed into foods during food processing. Natural sugars, by contrast, are simple sugars found in whole foods, like sugars found in fruits and vegetables.
Some sugars found in nature, like honey and maple syrup, are also considered added sugar.
The American Heart Association recommends consuming no more than 100 calories, or six teaspoons, of daily added sugars for females and children. Males can consume up to nine teaspoons, or 150 calories, of added sugars daily.
Unfortunately, the average American consumes 17 teaspoons of added sugar every day—that’s a 183% increase and an 89% increase from recommended daily intake for females and males, respectively.
And that excess sugar consumption has huge health consequences.
Sugar and aging
Added sugar increases the rate of biological aging. It does so in several ways. In 2018, the Annual Review of Nutrition published a systematic review of longitudinal studies on the correlation between high sugar consumption and cancer. They produced an infographic that aptly demonstrates just how much of the body added sugar ages and points to mechanisms as to why it does so:
This next section will drill down into three documented ways sugar and aging are intertwined: AGEs, inflammation, and diabetes. I’ll also cover a quick study on sugar’s effect on telomeres at the end.
Let’s talk a bit about “advanced glycation end products,” or AGEs. AGEs are a diverse group of molecules that build up in human cells, particularly in muscle tissue and plasma. They’re created as a reaction between glucose and the amino acid glycine—when sugar meets fat or protein in the body. AGEs have a particularly resistant structure to degradation.
Emerging research suggests that AGEs form endogenously at an even higher rate with fructose than glucose—sweeteners like high fructose corn syrup, apple juice, honey, molasses, caramel, and agave syrup all contain fructose.
In other words, AGEs make your skin appear dry, saggy, and wrinkled—old. While AGEs age your insides, they also quickly age your exterior as well.
Diet is a major source of AGEs—barbecued meats, in particular, are full of them. They can also form while humans metabolize their food. AGEs formed in vivo tend to particularly affect “long-lived proteins, such as hemoglobin, alkaline phosphatase, lysozyme, collagen [and] elastin.”
There’s a general consensus in the scientific community that accumulated AGEs “are an inevitable component of the aging process in all eukaryotic organisms, including humans.” The more you have, the quicker you age.
Inflammation is a biological defensive response to an irritant, like bacteria or viruses. If you skin your knee, the area around the cut will inflame, as a part of your immune system, to combat infection and to promote healing. Concentrations of white blood cells cause inflammation.
Inflammation can be short-term, or “acute.” If you’re like me and allergic to hay, your body will have an acute inflammatory response—an itchy, watery nose, a puffy face—until the irritant goes away. Inflammation can also be long-term, or “chronic,” and you can stay inflamed regardless if the trigger is still present.
While it’s a mystery why some inflammation remains acute and other inflammation becomes chronic in some people and not others, sugar consumption is a significant precursor to chronic inflammation in many people.
Sugar and aging: diabetes
If you want to see a complicated cocktail of fact and misinformation, look closely at the relationship between sugar, obesity, and diabetes.
Obesity is also a chronic disease. Obesity is defined as having a BMI, or a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters, of 30.0 or higher. According to Harvard Medical School, there are “genetic, developmental, hormonal, environmental, and behavioral factors” that contribute to who does and doesn’t have obesity.
I choose to mention obesity and diabetes together because they have a significant causal relationship—obesity is an independent risk factor that can lay the groundwork for diabetes to develop. Almost all (89%) of people with diabetes are obese or overweight. I found a massive range of estimates of how many obese individuals develop diabetes, from 2.9% to 30%. Many of the studies cited here look at both obesity and diabetes together as comorbid conditions. For example, hypertrophic obesity—what happens when fat cells enlarge more than normal—directly leads to insulin resistance.
Researchers have formally tied added sugar consumption to obesity and diabetes several times over. Though the relationship is complex and researchers don’t fully understand all mechanisms involved, it’s clear that added sugar consumption, particularly fructose, raises the risk of developing obesity and diabetes.
Sugar and aging: a bad combination (so what should we do?)
People looking to stay young for a long time should limit their sugar consumption. While how added sugar works in the body isn’t simple or predictable, there are literally thousands of studies tying added sugar to diseases of aging.
With all that said, it’s natural for humans to crave and eat limited amounts of sugar.
Sugar and aging is a massive topic with a lot of nuance—so much so that I didn’t even get a chance to cover alternative sweeteners.

Forget long workouts! Short spurts of exercise could lead to a longer life

The more steps you take each day, whether they are in short spurts or all at once, may lead to a longer life, a new study suggests.
While walking in bouts of 10 minutes or more appear to have the most impact on life expectancy, shorter strolls, if there are a lot of them, can also contribute, researchers reported Thursday at the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology, Prevention, Lifestyle and Cardiovascular Health Conference.
“This is just one study, but it suggests that there is a lot of flexibility in the way people can accumulate physical activity throughout the day,” the study’s lead author, Chris Moore, told Today.
“A lot of people think you need to go to the gym and have long bouts of continuous exercise, but you can be active without going to the gym,” said Moore, a PhD student at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. “And that’s more feasible for a lot more people, especially those like the participants in this study who were older women. Older adults have a lot of barriers to doing more structured exercise.”
The study suggests that people can get enough exercise to extend life just by increasing the distances walked by small amounts, Moore said. “For example, if you want to park slightly further away from a building you can get in more steps,” he said.
Most earlier studies relied on people’s memory of how much walking they did, Moore said. The new research is based on an experiment in which 16,732 participants in the Women’s Health Study (a national study focused on disease prevention) wore an accelerometer, a device that captures movement, for four to seven days between 2011 and 2015. The participants in the study were all over age 60 (average age 72) and were mostly non-Hispanic white women.
When they performed their analysis, the researchers categorized the total number of steps each woman took into two groups: those taken during bouts of 10 or more minutes with few interruptions and those taken in shorts spurts during daily activities such as taking the stairs or walking to and from the car.
Moore and his colleagues followed the women, tracking deaths from any cause, for an average of six years, through Dec. 31, 2019. Overall, 804 deaths occurred during the entire study period (2011 through 2019).
The women who took more steps in short spurts lived longer even if most of the steps were taken sporadically. The greatest impact was experienced by women who took 2,000 or more steps in bouts that were 10 minutes or longer in addition to 3,000 steps in shorter spurts: These women had a 32% decrease in the risk of death during the course of the study.
In future research, Moore would like to look more closely at women who took a lot of steps, but mostly in bouts of less than 10 minutes.
“What I love about this study is it really suggests that we should get activity however we can throughout the day,” said Dr. Seth Martin, a cardiologist and an associate professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
“It doesn’t necessarily need to be something planned or that you make time for,” Martin said. “It can be attained just by living life, taking the stairs, walking further distances to the car. It all adds up during the day. It’s surprising sometimes how quickly steps add up, a little here and a little there.”
To get the most out of those spurts of walking, it would be best to walk at a brisk pace, Martin advised. “You want to try to get your heart rate up a little,” he said.
“These results should push us to think about where in our daily lives are the opportunities to get more steps in,” Martin said. “Having dedicated bouts is beneficial as well. But you’ve got to start somewhere if you are way below the goals and work up from there.”

Dr. Kien Vuu specializes in longevity and his work focuses on helping his patients cope and manage their stress. “Getting rid of stress is the best medicine we can give ourselves,” he says, and he himself has had to manage his own stress-related disease, which he treated naturally, so he now wants to help others do so, without adding drugs into the equation.
Five years ago, Dr. Vuu had a wake-up call when he was diagnosed with early-stage diabetes. He realized his body was inflamed from unhealthy lifestyle choices and poor eating habits. Here’s how stress affects the body and mind
In our exclusive interview, Dr.Vuu explains how psychological changes happen in the body when we’re stressed since it had a place in our evolutionary survival when it allowed us to activate a “fight or flight” response when facing a perceived danger. Running from a saber tooth tiger may not be relevant today, but it’s the same response as when we think we’re going to get fired or experience conflict, and it helps people understand how stress, when it’s chronic rather than fleeting, can affect the body.
“When we run from something as scary and frightening as a saber tooth tiger, our heart rate goes up, and our blood thickens so just in case we get that flesh wound we don’t bleed out. This response makes our blood very sluggish. It diverts blood away from our visceral organs, such as our liver, kidney, gut, and into our skeletal muscles, so we can run away from the saber tooth tiger,” according to Dr. Vuu.
Then, he explained how this physiological feeling disrupts our body: “When we experience stressful situations, we’re not getting enough blood flow to the kidneys, which is an organ responsible for cleansing the blood. Our liver is also a detoxifying organ. Our gut is there to absorb nutrients. Under stress, we’re not going to detoxify very well. Your microbiome is going to be stressed, which might lead to a leaky gut. Inflammation in our body also increases,” said Dr.Vuu.
“If you get that flesh wound from the saber tooth tiger, we want to fight off all the infections and germs. It starts to heal that wound. But what happens in the chronic long term is that inflammation can attack part of your own body. Over time, this raises the risk of getting an autoimmune disease and basically sets the stage for every type of disease,” according to Dr. Vuu.
8 Surprising Ways to De-Stress from a Longevity Doctor
1. Gaze into the sky, soak up the sunshine: When you’re running from the saber tooth tiger your eyes get laser-sharp and your pupils start to constrict. If you start to relax your eyes, open them, allow your pupils to dilate and gaze at nature – that will then actually activate your parasympathetic state to counteract that stress.
2. Try a breathing technique: One of the best tricks to do is breathwork. If you need to run away from a tiger you normally taking very rapid, short, deep, shallow breaths. But if you were breathing long and slow that signals a state of calm, and activates both the vagus nerve and the parasympathetic system, which tells your body: ‘There’s no saber tooth tiger here.’ Slow your breathing to convince yourself that you are in a relaxed state. Breathe into the count of six, seven, eight, and out to one more count on the exhale to fully empty the lungs.
3. Move around: Just moving around is going to help detoxify your body. Stress raises antioxidants in your body and it can raise toxins that disrupt normal healthy cell function. When you have toxins, your immune system has to work overtime and when your cells start to show signs of wear and tear, the body needs to shunt them off for disposal, and your immune system would rather get busy fighting off bacteria and viral bugs. Moving around will shift the stress hormones by creating endorphins, which and will help you release stress and replace it with this natural feel-good chemical in your body.
4. Journal: Writing down your thoughts can help break the stress cycle when you get into a negative feedback loop. If you start to journal some of these thoughts, you may be able to get them down on paper, instead of having them stuck in your mind. You’re able to look at it and think ‘that’s a weird thought… Do I still want to keep this in my mind?’ It’s a way of gaining some control of how you want to think or how do you want to behave. Script the things that are going right in your life instead and put those into your mental process for repeating often.

Pause when you have a negative thought and take 10 slow deep breaths: This is a technique that Dr. Vuu said he learned from a psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, Victor Frankl who has seen so many devastating things in his life. Between stimulus and response, there’s space–in that space is our power to choose our response. And in that response, lies our freedom and growth.
Frankl has experienced and seen horrific things, but rather than react to them, he chooses how he wants to show up,” says Dr. Vuu. “If you could stop that negative pattern or way of thinking, or maybe that negative belief you have about yourself and choose how you want to show up, you can start this transformation process.
So when you find yourself feeling stressed or experience a negative emotion, pause and take 10 deep breaths in, through your nose, and out through your mouth very slowly. It will activate the vagus nerve (as we noted above) and as you do this breathing, notice that you’re creating space between that stimulus, and create a positive response instead.
6. Stand in a power pose: A person who’s feeling stressed or depressed often stands, breathes, and postures in a way that is tense, or defeated. They may be hunched over, their neck and head lowered down, or they may slouch. Emotional stress causes your body to carry itself differently than when you feel confident and in control. But if you change your posture, and stand in a power pose, it can make a huge difference and signal to the brain: I am here, I am in control and I am going to conquer whatever it is that’s in front of me.
A Harvard study showed how standing in a power pose for two minutes before delivering a speech in front of mock job interviewers, made the candidates more likely to be hired when videos of these people were shown to strangers. Just standing tall and expansively makes you more likely to seem confident and that translates into success.
Try moving in a power pose (upright, chest out, arms wide or out) to shift your physiology, Dr. Vuu suggests. How you choose to move, breathe, and gaze is a powerful physical technique for reducing stress in the body.
7. Try the ACT acronym to find joy and gratitude
If you’re feeling stressed because something ticked you off, or you were in an argument with a partner or spouse, use this acronym to help yourself calm down. Dr. Vuu uses the acronym A.C.T which helps people feel in control of their stress and manage it before it elevates into a bigger problem.
A–Awareness. If you have a negative feeling in your body, ask yourself to be aware of the trigger. By seeing patterns, you can head off the behavior that causes the stress before it happens.
C— Choice. You have the power of choice. What decision do you choose? Do you want to feel joy, gratitude, or happiness? The more you practice choosing happiness, the better you will be at feeling that emotion.
T—Take Action. What’s the next step you would do in this new stress-free version of yourself? Is it showing up with love, compassion, and gratitude? After a disagreement with a partner, you might say to yourself, I’m going to let that go and show up with love.
If you let yourself down, ask yourself: How can I show up with love for myself? Ate a whole tub if dairy-free ice cream? maybe it was your inner child and the trigger was something that could have been avoided next time if you took action.
“As you start to train to do this, what you’re doing is you’re training in new neuro networks so that you’re no longer a victim of your own trigger,” said Dr. Vuu. “You’re laying down new tracks to the emotions of love, joy gratitude,” he adds, which ultimately leads to healthier body function and anti-aging mechanisms to kick in.

8. To make a positive change in your life, try Dr. Vuu’s H.E.R.O acronym
Dr. Vuu is on a mission is to help people achieve optimal health, longevity, and peak performance. Therefore, when his patients need to change something in their lives to reach these goals, he suggests using the H.E.R.O acronym to transform their lives. “You’re going to need a reason to make that change,” he adds. Each letter works in a way to motivate people to make a change, according to Dr. Vuu.
“H” stands for Hunger. The hunger is really your Why? It’s the thing that will compel you to do something even though your habits make you resistant to change.
If you are committed to something the impetus for change cannot come just for yourself. Realizing that you are doing something for other people allows you to access greater leverage for change. You might have to look outside yourself for that leverage point. Defining your life and why you need to make that change is going to put you in the right direction.
“E” stands for Energy. “I talk about the bioenergetic model for health,” says Dr. Vuus, which means the energy of your cells within the environment they are existing in. “Your longevity depends on your body’s optimal performance. The flip side of that is experiencing chronic disease. “We can thrive and heal when we are in an optimal state.” But if our cells are stressed, inflamed, it requires the immune system to react, and then that will set off a chain reaction so that our bodies will continuously be failing to support optimal health.
What determines whether our cells are in an optimal state is the energy that your brain signals to the body, which can be stress-driven or what Dr. Vuu calls a “Thrive State.” Stress can negatively impact your cells’ ability to replicate by harming the DNA, and when DNA gets off track that means you can get diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and more. If our cells are functioning at a 75 percent capacity, that will also prevent our kidneys or liver from performing their important detoxifying work.
For everything to function as smoothly as it can, we need to prioritize better sleep, eat nutrient-dense food, work on our emotional relationships, tame negative thoughts, and adopt a positive mindset. “I boil it down to those seven things and if you master them, your ability to perform at your very best and prevent and reverse chronic disease. Your longevity is going to improve dramatically. That’s what it means to master your bioenergetic state.
“R” is for reclaiming. This has to do with reclaiming your identity. It’s about shifting that voice in your head that tells you: You aren’t a healthy person. Instead, tell yourself that you are is a gift to the world. You need to be at your very best to serve yourself and others. Imagine yourself as this healthier version of yourself in order to reclaim your identity. Then understand what you need to do, in order to reach that level.
“O” stands for optimization. The H.E.R. part of the acronym can be done on your own. But the O will require a doctor’s visit to measure your markers and get a baseline checkup. There might be problem areas of your life that still need to be resolved, even if you’re working towards doing these seven other things. You could have a food allergy, a mineral deficiency, or a hormonal imbalance. Know your cholesterol and blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, to determine whether there are still conditions that need to be resolved or improved. There are really two main signals that our cells are constantly listening to: Are we in a stress mode? Or are we in a thriving state? You get to determine which one your body hears.
