I have heard different opinions on the use of Saw Palmetto. I am an older fellow (50's) and don't know if it is right for someone in my agegroup. From what I understand it's good for the prostate gland. Any input would be appreciated.

Take centrum plus and eat healthy, saw palmetto can cause issues

What are the side effects?
Side effects are not common, but may include diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, high blood
pressure, back pain, headaches, erection problems, decreased sexual drive, and difficult or
painful urination.

I take a multi pack vitamin which contains 5 pills, they are stronger than the centrums. I just discard the saw palmetto pill. I pretty much eat healthy every day and workout. Luckily I didn't have any side effects. I don't think I have any prostrate problems yet, but was taking them as a preventive measure. Thanks for your response BigO.

Centrum is a no no.
Centrum vitamins are synthetic and also very low quantity.

Go for Solgar or Lamberts ( natural sources vitamins and good quantity).

Saw Palmetto got pretty overhyped for use in us over 50s guys. I took it for a while because it didn't seem like I was emptying my bladder when peeing and Saw Palmetto can shrink the inner lining of the prostate and reduce pressure on the urethra (does not appear to reduce the size of the prostate itself, though). It didn't work for me and I didn't want to risk the other side effects, especially interruption of DHT conversion, so I quit using it. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're planning to undergo prostate surgery and your doc recommends taking it prior to the surgery.

Regarding the other posts on vitamins. You should only need to take vitamins if you know you are deficient based on your health or diet. Many people who take them are just wasting money. I did do fairly mindful thinking about my diet and nutritional needs and decided to take a multi-vitamin to get several of the things I needed in one pill. I looked at a number of multi-vitamins and decided either Centrum Silver or Centrum Men would be good choices for me. Not all vitamins or multi-vitamins are the same - some high in one thing, low in another and vice versa. Read the label before you buy one.
