I have been taking a daily multi-vitamin (Optimum Nutrition) for about 2 years now. In the last year or so, my doctors have had me take a separate vitamins on top of the multivitamin. I'm now taking Vitamins D, B Complex, Magnesium, and fish oil in addition to the multi-vitamin. Should I continue to combine the mullti with the individual vitamins or should I start taking all of my vitamins individually?

I swallows a bunch of mine before breakfast, and a variety of others after dinner. My understanding is ones body absorbs what it needs and discards the rest. Too much of an overload will make you ill, and your wallet complains.

Individual vitamins may help you address specific concerns. Multi-vitamins may have minimal requirements, of not address a specific need that you want to individualize for <whatever> reasons.

Try buying a quality multivitamin. Most vitamins you get simply give you a bit more than the MDR although they love throwing extra C and B complex. If you need let me know and I'll get you a very good place to get them.

I only take specific vitamins that either my doc recommends based on blood tests - vitamin D, B complex, and fish oil and supplements that I reread about to address specific ailments - turmeric (anti inflamitort/joint pain), magnesium (sleep aid), vitamin E (ED), and apple cider vinaigr ((insulin resistance).

I read Skunk Cabbage is rich in Vitamin Pu.

Skunk cabbage is a perennial wildflower that grows in swampy, wet areas of forest lands. ... Skunk cabbage gets its name from the fact that, when the leaves are crushed or bruised, it gives off a smell of skunk or rotting meat.

I had bloods done at the docs and I was unbelievable low on vit D. My reading was 22 when it should be a min of 150.

That said, i live in the north of the uk, wear sunscreen everyday as a ginger and dont eat products with vit d added.

I now take a strong vit d supplement. The doctor said anything else i could take would be just wee'd out and waste of money.

You should get tested for what you actually need supplementing.

All of my doctors know that I'm taking a multi-vitamin and have added on to it. Similarly with the Vitamin D, my multi-vitamin only 500 IUD and the doctor wants me to do 10,000. I have magnesium and vitamin B in the multi as well but I guess not enough since they are having me take additional. I was wondering if it's simpler to just take individual of what I need. Good advice on asking the doc what they think would be best. I just get annoyed having to carry around so many bottles lol. I also am fair skinned (not ginger level though), so I wear sunscreen as well and spend about 95% of my day indoors.

@CUSP82 I'll definitely take any recommendations you have for quality supplements.

An aussie relation just got back from several years in UK and her D was similarly low . Vit D is even low here in tropical Queensland with 20% clinicaly low in any given year . Part of the reason is that Qld had very high rates of skin cancer and we were allways told to get out of the sun . How much D you need was historically understated .

Ok the 10000 iu would indicate that you had a blood test that showed you were low ?

Ok so my view on multi is that it is a bit of insurance against developing an issue . If you actually have a specific issue then you may need a specific supplement . So large numbers of people living in cold climes could benifit from d for instance . So magnesium do you get cramps? Vit B hmmm do you drink ? Fish oil is a good general health thing for many on a typical western diet who do not eat a ton of fish .

I play golf one or two days a week, stand around on an open tarmac for eight hours once or twice a month during auto cross events, and putter in the garden for about an hour a day, yet my vitamin D always comes out low even though I take 3,000 IU’s of vitamin D daily. As a diabetic, I need vitamin D to help increase insulin production.

For the vitamin D, it was recommended by my OBGYN because she said most women suffer from low vit D without even realizing it. So no blood work before, but once I started taking it, all of my bloodwork thereafter has been in the normal range.

For the Magnesium and B Complex, I was running about 5-6 days a week for about 2 miles a day (4-6 miles on Sundays). Then back in April I started having cramping, general muscle soreness, and twitching. I went to the doctor and that did come back with low magnesium. That's when I started taking the additional magnesium. I then saw a neurologist for the twitching (all tests came back ok), so the neurologist told me to continue the additional magnesium and added the vitamin B complex.

I like to take my Vitamin B complex on an empty stomach. Studies say that it absorbs better as well a Vitamin C being that they are water soluble vitamins. Vitamin D and Fish Oil, dissolves better with fatty foods (eggs, avocado, steak etc). Magnesium is great before bed or evening that it relax the muscle and give you a great sleep.
