So a friend and I were having conversation. His neighbor worked on the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. He hired out his boat as well. He had to work everyday. On his boat he had two other people on the crew. He was out there for four months. He only missed a few days for some personal reasons. In that four month period he made $140,000. He was not taxed on it. He went to a CPA who told him. Save at least 25% of your pay. Put it on the side and don't touch it. Well. He bought his wife a Camaro, him a new truck, four wheelers, guns, bow and arrows, and some other things. Plus he had a boat custom built which was four inches from being required for a wide load permit every time he wanted to take it out.

So we are outside at my friends house and I ask him. Man your neighbors house could use a little outside work to it. With all that money he made he should've done some. He tells me they had to file bankruptcy. You've got to be kidding me! Why? How? He said he didn't listen to the CPA by setting aside the 25%. So when the tax man came. He didn't have the money to pay his taxes.

Talk about burning a hole in your pocket. That's just sad.

His CPA told him too low in my mind. When the dust settled this last year we had to pay 37 percent.

Ps. They would need their own transpiration and will do errands outside the home. He could use my car for that or I'll pay mileage. Need to be squeaky clean ( no record) so that's worth more per hour. $15? $20?

Islander the rates vary according to where you are and the expected duties. Where I am from $20.00/hour is pretty standard. If expected to use their own vehicle for the outside chores an additional mileage fee can work, but again it depends how far they have to go. I find it better to pay an additional amount for the HSE of personal tools(not that tool people). Most people in this kind of service industry will have prices to offer you.

I was thinking recently about the phrase "If you don't do it someone else step up and be proud to do it" (or something to that effect.)

As I was thinking about it I found it to be quite true, not only in it's very noticeable meaning, but more so about what it could mean for individuality.

Now normally this saying tends to mean "don't miss your chance", or something like that, but could it also show that people are incredibly replaceable nowadays? It seems like in the last 20 years it seems like it has become much easier to get lost in the crowd, go unnoticed, and even what you do means less and less when someone can come around and do what you could. Before then it was really easy for you to stand out. Towns and cities had a lower population, smaller buildings, and not more than 40 or 50 years ago you could easily have been the one or the few of a certain profession that people really depended on, and depending on your career could be potentially life threatening for others if you were not there.

Does this saying possibly have a hidden meaning that we are all easily replaced or is it simply a warning of not wasting time before someone else takes it?

I think you should reread it and from an assertive side. You and only you can decide to take the opportunities presented you. If you choose to give them away, pass them by, not accept the gift you manifested for yourself. Then yes someone more assertive will take it, because now it is their turn to decide. You would be amazed how hard it is to take something from someone who refuses to give it up. You are obviously aware of how easy it is to give things away.

Bought a bike finally. Got it at Walmart right after work. Biked home, but it felt small, rickety, weak, and just not right. Didn't hurt to try buying one, but I am sure I will be returning it.
