I do ab and chest at the same time, but the ab workouts in my routine are regular sit ups, flat lying sit ups, leg up crunches, side crunches, leg lifts, scissor kicks, planking.

If you really want to work your abs, I suggest doing these exercises with weights.

It's better to do 3x8 hard crunches than 3x100 easy crunches.

Leg raises, crunches, swiss ball crunches, leg throws (have to have a partner)

and I disagree about the weight thing, unless of course you want to build a thicker waist.

You really won't build a thicker waist by doing ab exercises with weights. Because the abs themselves are not large muscles.
But if you work your obliques with large weights, yes, they can get quite bigger and unaesthetic.

I've gotta say AB RIPPER X (google it) is the number one ab workout. It's the one that gave me hard strong abs along with many friends of mine. But don't forget, no matter how often you exercise them or how strong they are, without approx 10% body fat or less you wont be seeing your abs. So eat healthy and exercise hard for that nice six pack!

It shouldn't be called ab ripper x...it should be called iliopsoas ripper x. Seriously. Your hip flexors will get a major workout which isn't always a good thing.

Also, a hot six-pac is 95% diet...unless the fat over the abs is gone, you ain't gonna see 'em.

Agree!

Low body fat and heavy squats/Deads is all you need. I do front squats to and they really hit my abs, You are hitting the core trying to stabilize yourself.

Depends on what your goals are. If you are looking for the big bulky chunky thick abdominal/waste development or the lean tight sexy midsection...you have a decision of what your goal is and that dictates which path you will choose to arrive at your destination.

Great abs are built in the kitchen. For exercise to maintain tone of the various abdominal muscle I recommend isometric flexing and posing, cat vomit, vacuums and planks.

Abs pop with Jump Rope

Abs pop with Jump Rope

I've worked out for years, always including an ab workout.
I do Squats and Deadlifts regularly, but my abs didn't pop until I started jumping rope.

When doing actual ab workouts you really have to concentrate on the contractions.

I do three ab exercises followed by 1 minute of jumping rope. I continue this rotation for 40 minutes.
I make sure I jump rope for at least 10 minutes during this workout.
I only do this once a week. I also incorporate ab workouts into my shoulder day and back day, but not as intense.

Also, your abs have an front and a back.
You need to do ab workouts while sucking in your gut, and while flexing outwardly.
This helps work the entire ab.

Yes I have a six pack.

Cardio and nutrition are great for showing the abs themselves. But to strengthen, I have always felt slow, proper crunches for high reps work great. Also, do planks. Hold for 2 minutes if you can, and do a few sets of these. These are great for strengthening the abs.

Ok.
Your abs, big or flat, will ONLY show if you DONT have excess belly fat and thats final. Strongmen have HUGE and POWERFUL abs, but are fat as whales, so you cant see their abs. Soccer players have smaller and flatter abs, but you can see their 6-pack because they have ZERO fat.

Your abs are muscles SIMILAR to ALL other myscles in your body. For example: Chest, doing bench press with just the bar, this means high reps, will give you a nice and firm chest but not big and bulky. You need to use heavy weigh to do that and it will take MORE time, maybe YEARS.
FIRST OF ALL! Do you want your abs to just look nice and fit? Or do you want your abs to be like huge balls with deep valleys in between?
If you want the first, then do 2-3 sets of crunches and leg raises with no weight every other day.
If you want the second, then use weights. Do plated crunches. Windshield wippers. Any ab exercise that is REALLY hard and you cant do more than 8 reps in the first set. Work heavy and at least for 30' during every ab workout. HOWEVER, this will greatly fatigue your abs, thus you need more rest days, like 3-4. Think logically, you cant dealift, squat, or bench heavy every other day. You are still sore like hell.

Once you understand this basic knowledge YOU will see which exercises you like and you ALONE will create a nice program that fits your goals.
Hope I helped. :)
Oh and btw, Im speaking from great body building experience here. What I say is what I learned over my years of training.

Best post in this thread so far.

Ad pull ups and these are the 3 best core exercise you can do according to muscle activation tests.

Diet, Diet, Diet as many have stated.

The best movement i know for making the Rectus Abdominis pop out (which is what most are after) are crunches on a swiss ball with a BIG dumbbell on your chest. 3x8-12 reps only TILL FAILURE. Many people treat abs totally different than other muscles (yes there are 2 muscle types Phasic and tonic and should be trained slight differently but lets not get side tracked) and do things like 100 cruches in sets. You might have a hard flat abs (if you get sub 11% BF) but they dont pop out like you see on some guys.

I'll also ad a fav quote of ours "No! Bulk Up! Abs on a Skinny guy are like big tits on a fat chick. THEY DONT COUNT"

In closing il repeat. diet, DIET, DIET

Any kind of exercise for the abs is a good exercise. It does not really matter what kind of ab exercises you are doing, as long as your abs are getting enough stimulus!

Man, AB Ripper X is pretty damn hard. I usually start to falling out of form on the scissor one.

The best exercise is cardio combined with a balanced diet, if you have too much body fat your abs won't be seen regardless of how big they are...crunches and all that crap are a waste of time

A few months back, I did a bit of research on Youtube in my quest to see the most effective abs routine. There were the usual standard crunch/plank/bicycle kick type workouts that from the looks of the models had some tone and a healthy appearance. Then I came across the "hardcore" stuff i.e ripped cut to the bone strong and lean look. These were usually workouts performed in inner city parks with just exercise bars like you might find in a childrens playground. Most of the exercises were hanging leg raises or variations of this exercise from all conceivable angles. These guys although "thuggish" for all intents and purposes, had the science of getting great abs down to a tee. Sustained contraction of many body muscles through advanced bodyweight moves were also used quite a bit in their routines. Some of this stuff was quite impressive and they shredded cut stomach just seemed to a given in all of those Youtube clips.
I switched my training to copy some of what I saw , albeit at a more beginner level . The results were like nothing I had seen or felt before. My abs were never felt as hard from doing hanging leg raises along with leg raises using dip bars followed by the most brutal of them all ....dragon flags using a fixed 45degree decline board with a grip bar behind the head. A seriously tough exercise. Objective of which is to rest as little of your body on the board as you descend from a legs pointed upwards position and then begin the journey back up without resting. I did these main exercises as my abs routine 3 to 4 times per week along with a low carb high protein diet and built a six pack to be proud of.

2-3 times a week I do:

Bicycles

Situps

Crunches

Leglifts

Situp Twist

Planks

Atleast 3 sets of each for 2 min per set or to fail, whatever comes first. I use a medicine ball and ankle weights the whole time. I feel the most from the bicycles I think and they are the first thing I do.

Not everyone is fat... even though most people are these days... and not every skinny guy has abs (far from it actually.) To call ab workouts a waste of time is way off. I have perfect body fat and wont get a six pack through cardio and dieting...
