I have said this before ; you really have to act like a jerk to get banned on this forum! You have to be mean, cruel, arrogant, insensitive to others, or just a complete ass. Trust me it's harder than you think to get banned. No matter what the topic everyone deserves the same respect that they themslves want. It's simple to do!

It's not THAT hard ;)

With all due respect, the use of the term "gay" or "fag" - or whatever it was - was not intended to make any other members feel uncomfortable. Users of those terms do not intend to cause discomfort. It is a word that is becoming more and more common to describe things unfavorable, like it or not, and if I had to compare it to a synonym I'd say it most closely resembles "lame". I only want to point this out because my age group (late teen early twenties) is particularly responsible for most of its usage.

I'm not saying that homosexuals should be happy that the word is thrown around as casually as it is, but I have never heard anybody on this forum deriding a known homosexual member by calling him gay or a faggot, just as you say you can't recall an incident where a gay man tried to make another member feel uncomfortable. Maybe, as Cusp has pointed out, its continued use will eventually cause the word to completely shift meaning.

I wrote this because I would never use these terms on the forum (not sure why anybody would, there are better means of describing things) but in real life we do not get to deliver our thoughts so precisely. I recently went to AC with three people, one of whom is homosexual, and many times throughout the night my straight friends and I called things gay. So did our homosexual buddy.

I know that it is not an intentional slur, but making gay synonymous with lame is not necessarily a positive view of homosexuals. For example, if you look at an old Dirty Harry movie, there is a reference to an old expression: "that's mighty white of you." It was intended to mean, "hey thanks for doing the right thing." At the time I grew up, it was a fairly common expression among folks who in no way thought of themselves as racists. But making "white" synonymous with a noble act, it can't help but be offensive to non-whites. The old "tar baby" expression was meant to be a sticky thing that the harder you worked to get it off, the more it stuck. Again, it was not intended to be racist. But I would not use that expression in the same context today. The Yiddish word for for black when used towards African Americans, Shvartze, has also become offensive in current context. Language has power.

Runnin' Down a Dream, Goin' Wherever it Leads.
Gay use to mean happy. Then it meant a homosexual. Now it pretty much means lame.
Fag use to mean a ciggarette. Then it meant homosexual (derrogatory). Now it pretty much means super douche cock-head.
Only a matter of time until the other words meanings are changed (hopefull). I don't like having words I'm not allowed to use without any... issues... as in physical voilence towards me.
Not that I hate anyone for their race or sexuality or anything. I watch myself with that around my gay friends/co-workers. Always funny when they use it, I can think of quite a funny road rage incident off the top of my head.
There is one South Park episode that goes over how fag is used today. (unedited, but fag was NOT edited when it aired originally)
The F Word (Season 13, Episode 12) - Full Episode Player - South Park Studios

It's all about context. I think people can latch on to words out of context to construct an offensive intent where originally there was none, which leads to the other person being offended by being taken out of turn and so on...

There's no excuse for abuse in any circle, and while I know it's not always easy to recognise when the language you use could be derogatory or perpetuating a messed up sense of value, but there's a world of difference between using the word 'black' as part of an insult as an intensifier, and getting all het up about the words "blackboard" or "blackguard" . Context context context.

For what it's worth, doesn't the appropriate phrase to use to descibe the characteristics of any race or social group change every few years anyway? It's such a mess, people shouldn't be so sensitive, sometimes it's like people are looking for reasons to justify their own feelings of inadequacy in unrelated places. Ultimately there's nothing wrong with describing somebody, and race, religion, sexual preference, these things can be solely descriptive with no offence intended. Ultimately we're all in one minority group or another, and most people would seem to prefer to be "normal" whatever that is. Personally I'd rather have characteristics that made me stand out, but that's just me.

Meh.. I know i'm rambling. And I know it's a complicated issue. I just can't help feeling it's far more complicated than it needs to be because the policymakers in our society pander to the most sensitive and vocal complainers rather than encouraging respect and fortitude.

Just in case it is not obvious to everyone, threatening the members or staff here will get you banned but quick.
Here is a real life example of a message that will get you thrown overboard:

To the administration and moderation staff. I do not "spam" as this person has suggested. I provide real information and real resources. I use the links the way I do, so that I may track activity and build statistical reports, success stories, and survey the improvements made from the use of my shared information. I do not think that my reports constitute my being labeled as "spammer" and consider this to be in violation of my rights as a human being in the context of "slanderous material" if there is a continuation of such repeated claims then I will have no problem in consulting my lawyer on any options that I would have available in terms of legality. I do not wish to travel that path, so I encourage the staff to please reduce the negative comments in regards to my posts. I am a very skilled researcher and writer, so I do not see why any of these claims would even withstand the most elementary of debates. Thanks for taking the matter in to consideration.
Have a wonderful day.

Dirty harry says it in very ironic way though. Language only has the power we choose to give it. I think it is very sad how much power it has though. Peoples true meanings are continually lost due to political correctness (sorry, I dont think its a word but just couldnt come up with anything else that would fit lol).

Infact if i had been a moderator and i recieved this my finger would've hit the banning button with lightning speed :thumb:

Do i have a grudge against this banned guy? Well he did say something incredibly arrogant and pompous to me a couple of minutes before his banning. So yes i do!

Good riddance :thumb:

dsmall - please try to understand that I am not marginalizing the suffering that can occur when the word "fag" is used in a bullying sense. I would truly feel for an openly gay man who is being constantly berated and called faggot and what not, and I would NEVER condone such action. To me THAT is offensive, by the very definition. But when the word gay is used to describe something, you must also please understand that given the context, as Spanky said, homosexuality more often than not has nothing to do with the meaning of the word. Instead of being offended at the very site or use of the word, try to understand its meaning and use in context. Now granted I, and many others, wouldn't be caught dead using that word to describe something on here, but try to pay no mind by the other individuals who are not so intellectually endowed and so must resort to such crude adjectives.
