Hi,
my wife has suffered with depression since her dad died 3 years ago. She has taken anti depressants on and off since then, but after her last visit to the doctor she was described sertraline. This was about 8 months ago, prior to this we had a healthy regular sex life, now it's almost non existent.

We have spoken about it a number of times and she says that although she still finds me attractive etc. that she only feels horny 3 maybe 4 days a month. Things improved slightly for a couple of weeks but it very quickly goes back to nothing. Also she might feel horny one morning and by the time I get home from work it's gone again.

so we have slipped into a rut where we have sex once a fortnight, on a Sunday, in the bedroom if she is in the mood and feeling relaxed enough to be interested and the kids are out of the house and I feel like she might be receptive.

Lots of potential there for a no.

If I feel horny I just have to deal with it.

This kid free time is diminishing as the kids get older and I can see it getting to a point where it's down to once a month or less. She doesn't like close cuddling in bed in case I get horny because she feels guilty for not feeling the same way. And we used to kiss passionately on and off, now it's just a peck like you give your grandma. Again I have told her she doesn't have to feel guilty if I get a hard on, I just like being physically close to her. I have also told her that sex is only a part of it and that I just like the bond of physical closeness. We have also discussed the kissing as well but she almost immediately slips back into the peck on the lips.

she is affectionate and always tells me she loves me and always has done, she tells me she fancies me but has only instigated sex probably twice in the last 8 months. I have made numerous attempts but constant rejection is really hitting my self esteem. My logical mind tells me it's just the tablets but emotionally it hurts every time she says get off or I'm not bothered. She says she just doesn't feel relaxed when the kids are in the house, Or if the house is untidy (which it always is withloamy kids) plus they are pretty much always in the house (16 yo girl and 12 yo boy with ADHD).

Also I was in a really bad relationship before I met my wife and I allowed myself to be emotionally and mentally abused by a psychotic woman. The trouble is what's happening with my wife is almost like a carbon copy of what happened with my ex and it's fucking with my head. I can't tell the wife because she will think I am comparing her with my ex (which she is nothing like I want to add!). So then I find I'm getting bloody performance anxiety as well sometimes when we do get round to sex. I think my heads totally mashed now.

So, now you have the background, I have some questions and would love to hear positive ideas and thoughts or comments

1. Are there alternative ssri tablets that don't destroy libido that can be prescribed in the uk?
2. Is there anything I can do to help her feel more relaxed?
3. is there anything I can do to help me fell more relaxed?

Any advice would be welcome, thanks in advance

Hey Eazygeezer! So sorry to hear of your situation. I'm not knowledgeable on anti depressants but have heard they will in fact mess with libido. She may be exhausted, not feeling sexy, and hates to have sex while the kids are home, but goodness, when will y'all ever find time to just do it?

There are plenty of times when I'm exhausted and not in the mood, but the first hint that my husband wants sex, it's game on. It might take me a few extra minutes to get into it, but afterwards, I'm thankful that I didn't turn him down. And he's the same way. Sex is just a wonderful thing and we all should take advantage of every opportunity we have to enjoy it with the one we love. It's relaxing, invigorating, and just plain ole fun!

Maybe talk to your wife the importance of a healthy sex life between you two and let her know what it does for you, as a man, and as her husband, when she rejects your advances.

*Maybe she should talk to her Dr. about her lack of sex drive, as there may be better options out there for her.

Look up "brain zaps from anti d"
If she's been on and off it can be brutal. This happens when you stop cold turkey or go to lower dose. A brain must be weened off it slowly could take ONE year.

Also educate yourself on anti d so you can understand how they work, how long it takes to retrain the brain, side effects that prompt change of medication etc
They trick the brain.

IMO she needs a dosage check. Anyone on an anti d needs a liver / blood test and emotional exam at least every three months. The dosage ALWAYS changes. If her doctor is not properly monitoring her find one that will.

Also IMO anyone on anti d should be in therapy as well. They are hand n hand. One with the other.

If she is getting dosage checks, blood tests, therapy ( with and without you) then she is still very sad. This is a deep depression and hopefully you can stick with her. Depression can be physical and mental. It's no joke it's serious.

Praying for your family.

If the depression is not organic in nature then maybe we shouldn't use pill but a therapist to help her get over her depression, unless of course you like what the pills are doing.

The doctor offered cbt (cognitive behavioural therapy) but she hasn't been blood tested and when she goes back I have asked her to ask for a different tablet. I will try and get her to undertake cbt with me if possible. Not sure what you mean by organic?
I think my original post pretty much sums up how not happy I am about the pills

Maybe this is coming from the wrong side of the isle, but I personally use Celexa, an SSRI (Anti-Depressent). I had an issue with sex drive because of it, and brought down the prescription level. Naturally I have a very high sex drive, so this definitely made me feel like I was missing something. Seriously, like a guy loses the urge to get a boner, she must lose the urge to get wet... even if she wants too. I know it sounds weird to someone that hasn't experienced it, but believe me, it sucks. What I did was lower the dosage, that helped bunches... at first I went through SSRI withdrawl, but I fought through it and my penis is happier for it. And so am I. If you have questions regarding SSRI's, especially Celexa, let me know. I will be more than happy to answer your questions the best I can.

Orgasm is mediated by the sympathetic nervous system and can be disrupted by drugs such as SSRIs leading to anorgasmia (SSRIs are sometimes prescribed to men with premature ejaculation to delay their orgasm). Arousal is mediated by your parasympathetic nervous system and can be disturbed by drugs such as TCAs. There are other classes of antidepressants with fewer sexual side effects. Buproprion is classically prescribed when patients complain of sexual side effects from other antidepressants (but is contraindicated for patients with seizure disorders, eating disorders, or other electrolyte abnormalities). She should ask her doctor about switching to an alternative antidepressant.

Man i know what you feel! My girlfriend was on antid for 2 years! it was all fine at first and then, well you already know. My advice? your girlfriend needs to quit taking antid ASAP! just search on google "jim stone antid" and take your own conclusions. My girlfriend is taking 5htp now, for 3 months already and so far so good. and yes, her libido is geeting back to normal. Sorry for any mistake, english is not my first language.

Anti-depressants really do mess with your libido. I have ALWAYS had an extremely high libido my entire life. I took Celexa for almost two years after a sudden death of a family member, a cancer diagnosis & an asshole husband all coincided. I was quite shocked at my total lack of sex drive especially as this was abnormal for me even in a strained marriage. Even when I wanted to please myself I really had no drive whatsoever. Luckily for me being on the medication was temporary and as soon as I got off of it and it was out of my system I noticed a complete 180! And even though I was only enjoying sex with myself it was back to the normalcy I desired. Perhaps she can ask her doctor. I KNOW here in the states there are various meds. This really IS a medical problem that is affecting your life negatively as well as your own self esteem & healthy sex life. Please talk to her about this and approach it genuinely just as you did here. She needs to not pussyfoot telling her doctor the severity though. That is crucial. Doctors hear it all so she just needs to be straight with him. And honestly it's been 3 years... she too may be ready to wean off of the meds. Best of luck!

Thanks for the advice and support, we have spoken about it all over the last couple of days and I feel like we have really made some progress. She is going to consider the extra tablets but more importantly we are back to being really close again. She said she hadn't been aware of how badly it had been making me feel and I think we will really be able to move forward positively.

i know it's a rocky road with depression as I have suffered with it myself in the past. It took me a long time to get over it and I had some therapy which really helped, I have been off medication myself for over 5 years now but suffer sometimes with anxiety issues which I am constantly battling with which probably makes an episode like this seem worse than it actually is/was.

Thankfully we talk our issues out and are totally open and honest with each other which is a major help in dealing with any problems we have either as partners, friends or lovers. It's just nice sometimes to know that you aren't the only one with problems and that there are kind people willing to offer help and advice.

Once again thank you all so much for taking the time to both read and post :)

Just a brief update, went to the doctors tonight and the wife has been prescribed Prozac instead of sertraline. She also has to recheck in a months time, the wife and I also talked in depth about the root of the problem and I think that within the next year or so it will be resolved!!
really positive stuff! prozac ain't as bad as sertraline but it still ain't good, keeping my eye on that longer term goal though now that it is squarely in sight!

Thanks again for all your input and ill post updates here when there is anything noteworthy to add :)

Just wanted to update you all on what's been happening over the last couple of months.

Over last 2 months no difference on the Prozac, wife had zero libido and other associated side effects

the awesome! - she has weaned herself off the ssris, and we are tackling some of the problem issues together!

She is turning back into her old self :) I know it's a long road back but I can't tell you how happy I am to see the woman I married coming back to me instead of a shadow of her.

I took her away for the weekend and we have had a fantastic time, lots of open conversations and lots of awesome sex!

Thanks for all your open and helpful advice
