Want to Lower Your Risk for Prostate Cancer? Ejaculate More Often!

Prostate-DiagramAccording to research presented at the American Urological Association 2015 Annual Meeting, ejaculating more frequently may reduce the risk of a man getting prostate cancer. This is some very exciting findings, given an estimated 220,000 men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year.

What is the Prostate?

The prostate is located just below the bladder, in front of the rectum. This walnut-shaped gland wraps around the urethra – the tube that carries sperm and urine through the penis. The prostate’s primary function is to make a portion of the seminal fluid, which forms semen when mixed with sperm. What are some of the Signs and Symptoms of Prostate Cancer?

Because the prostate is wrapped around the urethra, if it becomes enlarged, men often notice bladder-related symptoms. These can include: increased frequency of urination (often at night), increased urgency in the need to urinate, difficulty in starting the flow of urine or stopping it, the inability to urinate, weak urine stream, a urine stream that is interrupted, pain or burning sensation when urinating, the feeling that the bladder is not completely empty after urination, blood in your semen or urine, and/or pain when ejaculating.

More Frequent Ejaculation May Reduce the Risk of Prostate Cancer

Lead author of the encouraging study, Jennifer Rider, ScD, MPH, is an epidemiologist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, in Boston. The results of this study update a previous study, published in the Journal of American Medical Association, more than ten years ago, in 2004. This study includes the largest number of participants to date, Rider explains, and includes specific ejaculation information.

In 1992, when participants were recruited, the men were asked to report their average ejaculation frequency from the ages of 20 tо 29 years аnd 40 tо 49 years, аnd durіng thе previous year. A lifetime average wаѕ thеn computed frоm thеѕе reports.

Aftеr potential confounders wеrе controlled for, thе risk fоr prostate cancer wаѕ 20% lоwеr іn men whо ejaculated аt lеаѕt 21 times а month thаn іn men whо ejaculated 4 tо 7 times а month. Thе 20% risk reduction wаѕ ѕееn аt ages 20 tо 29 аnd 40 tо 49, аnd fоr thе lifetime average.

One of the most interesting statistics (and one of the most dangerous, given this new information) was that at ages 40 to 49 years old, the largest percentage of men (38.0%) reported only ejaculating 8 to 12 times per month. Significantly less than the at least 21 times enough to receive the prostate health promoting benefits. Only 8.8% of men, in this age range, reported ejaculating at least 21 times per month.

Conclusion

If you’d like to reduce your chances of getting prostate cancer, ejaculate at least 21 times each month, throughout your lifetime. Adding this to the end of your penis exercise routine could save your life.
