Most phobias and anxieties get better by CBT(Cognitive behavioral therapy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) in combination with graduated exposure therapy or sometimes referred to as systematic desensitization (Systematic desensitization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). There are literally thousands of books who offer 100% cures on all sorts of anxieties, and 90% of them just give you some useful information and that's it. Nobody gets cured by reading a book or listening to an audio tape. A psychologist will never talk about a cure, he will talk about recovery.

if that works for you, cool. It won't work for other things. Also... just a quick thought: You said something intelligent when you said that no book or whatever is going to cure you

That's perfectly right. You have to actually apply those things, you can't read it and automatically get better, you got to internalize those teachings. Reading math book won't make you good in math, it's the same with everything.

You think that if you go to a psychiatrist and they talk to you and you get over your phobia, the doctor healed you? You chose to listen and carry out what he is saying. I really don't know what the debate is now. That a psychiatrist is better at healing your phobias or anxieties or depressions? If it's done by talk, that's good, it's still yourself who chooses to let go of those beliefs or change them. If they give you some pill... then that's a different story. For psychological things, I really believe there is a way to fix every psychological problem without a pill. Same thing with physical disease, it happened, therefore why can't it happen to everybody ? Because it's not replicated in a laboratory under I don't know what conditions? It's difficult to measure thoughts and beliefs. However, there is no better proof than people who share their stories and their success. It's the same here in this forum. Some people are discouraged but quickly get encouraged when they see what others have accomplished already. Human experience is more valid to me than 'scientific' evidence. If someone tells me: hey, this this and this happened. If its one guy, maybe im skeptic. If there are thousands ummm.... i'll give them the benefit of the doubt :)

Hopefully more people will share their opinions. There are 17 pages but only several people have been commenting on their thoughts about this

for me the thing that the book couldn't do is figure out why i was anxious(i know it sounds stupid), tell me ways to change my thought process for my specific need, give me encouragement to do more things out of my comfort zone and give me techniques to help me control my specific anxieties.
im sure some of these books help people to a certain extent but nothing will be better than sitting face to face talking with a professional.

Seriously, if you have a problem like this, I think its possible to think: Ok, I caused this problem. These thoughts are not real because I don't see everyone suffering from this particular anxiety. If I caused it in my head, logically I can de-cause it in my head. This is a good first step to give you motivation and realize that... hey, it's your mind. Control your mind, don't let it control you. Easier said than done, I know :)

At some point you lose the energy to argue, for me it ends here. I honestly feel like I'm talking to my 16 year old sister who thought she knew everything about the world. You are not capable of understanding how science works, how psychology in the real world works. It's not about claims based on exceptional stories, it's about research, case studies, and conclusions based on all information gathered. Publications, others cases, conferences, etc...

But you read into this stuff a while ago, and your believes are blinding you from seeing the truth. You are basically brainwashed with this "meta"-stuff. And I know you are going to throw this back at me, but instead give me one example of someone who was brainwashed by mathematics.

Maybe just for a short moment think about all the scientists, engineers and researchers who are actually trying to make a difference in this world. They won't have flashy websites selling books. They don't try to live in the spotlights or get rich. Those people deserve respect. Not the people making promo-docu's for their books and DVD-sets, while showing some content they didn't even make themselves and that was taken out of the context.

It makes me angry, while it should only make me laugh. That's why I stop posting now. And I now that you next post will make me even more angry, but I'm just gonna let it pass me by. Oh yes, moderators, I'm dissapointed in you.

obviously anxiety is in the head and the only person who can change that is me, but you need someone to give you the info for your specific needs to be able to change it, books are not specific to a certain need they try to cover all angles and end up covering very few if any. i stuck with 3 books for 6 months put everything i had into what it was saying but it didn't work for me.

John Nash, won the Nobel prize in economics was a paranoid delusional schicophrenic. A tremendous mind that without a "pill" would be in a corner somewhere roled up in a ball. There are so many psycological conditions that exist that must be cured by a pill because their brain is broken. Will postive thinking cure diabetes? Will it cure poison ivy? Gog I'm going to asume that up to this point in your life you have had nothing seriously wrong with you and for that I'm happy. When that day comes, and it will in life, will you shun what cures medicine can offer because you'll fix it with your mind?

Johnny maybe it's just me, but your arguments seem repetitive and shallow sometimes

1) Maybe just for a short moment think about all the scientists, engineers and researchers who are actually trying to make a difference in this world. They won't have flashy websites selling books. They don't try to live in the spotlights or get rich. Those people deserve respect. Not the people making promo-docu's for their books and DVD-sets, while showing some content they didn't even make themselves and that was taken out of the context.

Those people do deserve respect, of course. They don't sell books, but they charge you 50 euro just for a consultation in certain cases where they don't actually do anything. This amount can be even higher, lower, it depends. You keep on saying those people sell books. So what? I told you 50 times you can find the information for free. If you are still going to use this argument that they sell things, it's useless.
The medicine and surgeries also cost money. Are they bad? No. If they find out that at least 1/3 of all medication is just as good as a placebo.... don't you think that things doctors treat you for you can treat yourself if they actually don't help, except that it makes you believe they actually did something?

2) You are not capable of understanding how science works, how psychology in the real world works. It's not about claims based on exceptional stories, it's about research, case studies, and conclusions based on all information gathered. Publications, others cases, conferences, etc...

I think the exceptional stories are more important, they will actually lead us to the future of evolution. Science just labels it: spontaneous remission or a miracle and then on to the next case. When these things are understood, human kind will make a great leap forward. There are no such things as 'miracles', they are all natural and normal, as long as we are not ignorant.

CUSP, I agree with you, in the age we are in now, a pill can offer a huge relief and fix many things. Yes diabetes can be cured. Cancer can be cured. These diseases can be cured. However, when we stop looking at each body part as part of a machine that has to be treated individually. In India that dude lived two weeks without food. According to the scientific community he should be dead. Thing is, he has been doing it for years. Science can't explain everything. When we acknowledge the true nature of miracles, which is consciousness I believe, these things will become mainstream and we will have a different world. Why is it that we use so little of our brains. Why do biologists say that 70% of our DNA is junk DNA, as I learned in bio class? Something as efficient as the human body to have 70% of its DNA be useless is absurd. Science doesn't find a use for it since they don't study consciousness (they began to, that's what quantum science does), so they don't understand it.

I enjoy having this discussion. I admit that sometimes I got mad about certain ignorant answers (in my opinion), but we should not take it personal and just try to expand our mental box which in my opinion is the goal in life at the end of the day

Well maybe you enjoyed Gog but others didn't.If you offended anybody it didn't seem to matter. I always care if I have offended others and try not to. Calling others shallow, naive and some of the other cute little things that you have said has and will lead to more arguments and more hard feeling. I wish you well in your beliefs and hope that you never need what medicine has to offer. You are young and you will learn. This story is over and this thread is closed.
