The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see the past better than it was, the present worse than it is, and the future less resolved than it will be.

One of my favorite poems:

The Dash
by Linda Ellis copyright 1996

I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on the tombstone
from the beginning…to the end.

He noted that first came the date of birth
and spoke the following date with tears,
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
that they spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved them
know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own,
the cars…the house…the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.

So, think about this long and hard.
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
that can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
to consider what’s true and real
and always try to understand
the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger
and show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives
like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect
and more often wear a smile,
remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read,
with your life’s actions to rehash…
would you be proud of the things they say
about how you spent YOUR dash?

I wish you enough
I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how grey the day may appear.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.
I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye.

When you realize Zen, you will see yourself in all beings.
The destitute oppressed and the cruel tyrant that oppresses them;
a hungry child and a bloated landowner; a famous saint and a notorious rogue;
a friend you meet in the market place and a person you pass while walking whose name you will never know. All share the one Buddha-nature.

"Try not to focus your mind anywhere in particular, but rather let it fill your body. Let it flow through your whole being. Then you will find you spontaneously use your hands when necessary and legs or eyes when needed, without wasting time and energy."

- Zen master Takuan's instruction to the great samurai Yagyu Tajima

"Where does my life go?
I sit alone meditating quietly in my hut.
From all my thinking, I know nothing.
This is my now. Eternal change and emptiness.
For a while the ego rests here with it's "yes and no".
I follow my karma - perfectly content"

- Ryokan

"Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy."

Or

"Don't let the door knob hit ya where the good Lord split ya."

I think it was the same author.

I think the author was my grandfather. Let me know if you need a source reference.
