Hi

I'm new to this forum having suffered sexual side-effects from taking Minoxidil (Rogaine) over the past month.

My timeline is as follows:

ROGAINE USAGE

Jun 2014 - Started taking Rogaine 5% Foam. Applied once a day, 3-4 times a week (it wasn't a priority).
Sep 2014 - Some sexual side-effects started: smaller flaccid penis, reduction in spontaneous and morning erections, some lower back pain on the left-hand side and heart palpitations. I didn't link any of these symptoms to Rogaine.
2-25 Nov 2014 - Three weeks without using Rogaine as I ran out of the product.
26 Nov 2014 - Went back on Rogaine, applied twice a day over the next week.
2 Dec 2014 - Unable to have penetrative sex for first time in my life owing to ED. Lost erection when I changed positions and couldn't penetrate.
3 Dec 2014 - Finally made connection between sexual side-effects and Rogaine. Stopped using Rogaine.

INITIAL DOWNTURN

4-12 Dec 2014 - Shrivelled, smaller-than-usual penis, coldness, tingling and numbness in my penis. Difficulty getting an erection followed by 4-5 days of total impotence.
6-7 Dec 2014 - Two days of irritability, anxiety and "brain fog". I normally can concentrate very well for hours at a time. For 36-48 hours I struggled. Then symptoms went away and haven't returned.

RECOVERY

13-17 Dec 2014 - Started to get some feeling in my penis back. Flaccid penis felt a little fuller. Day on day erections improved, although they needed manual and visual stimulation.
18 Dec 2014 - Had sex twice within 24-hour period with my partner after taking one Cialis tablet. Rock-hard erection - felt elated.
19-22 Dec 2014 - Good morning and spontaneous erections without any stimulation - better than they had been in September, October and November. Fuller penis in shower and under clothing during day. Things seemed to be 100% back to normal. I was delighted.

SECOND DOWNTURN

23 Dec 2014 - Before going to bed I noticed penis looked and felt a little more flaccid again. It had gone back to looking at it did during 4-12 Dec period and was unresponsive.
24 Dec-present (1 Jan 2015) - Gradual loss of erections - went from good erections (80%) without any manual contact purely from sexting, to needing some (light) manual stimulation, to difficulty getting an erection via manual stimulation, to needing 3 mins of manual stimulation in front of a video in order to get an erection that disappears as soon as the hand is taken off. Penis has become cold and numb and looks shrivelled when flaccid, although is fuller than it was during that initial downturn period (4-12 Dec). Morning erections have disappeared.

Further notes:
* During my initial sexual problems (4-17 Dec) I ate very cleanly (water, green tea, Zinc supplements, spinach, arugula/rocket, beets/beetroot, a glass of pomegranate juice every day).
* From Dec 18-23 I maintained most of these clean foods in my diet but also added some bad foods (processed meats, sweets, sugar, coffee, McDonalds....) because I thought I was better. I wonder if this dietary change may have been a factor in my second downturn.
* Heart palpitations have completely disappeared since I stopped using the product;
* I have less pain in the lower left back since I stopped using the product;
* No loss of libido at any point since I started taking Rogaine. A few minor ups and downs but this is mainly linked to worry about my physical condition rather than any loss of libido. My levels of lust/desire have remained somewhere between fairly high and very high depending on what else is going on in my life (work, being busy, etc), which is normal for me.

OBSERVATIONS

Having read several forums I have noticed that my timeline is similar to many Propecia users that experience a "crash". e.g - sexual problems while on the product, followed by an initial improvement ending the product, followed by more sexual problems. I am in no way saying Propecia and Rogaine work on the body in the same way, or that the symptoms from taking Rogaine are as severe or as long-lasting, but I couldn't help noticing the similarities from a chronological point of view.

I believe the fact I went off the drug completely for three weeks in November before returning with a greater dosage (twice a day rather than once a day) may have made my current reaction more severe. I am in touch with others affected by the product that believe this to be the case.

My side-effects are almost entirely sexual. The lower left back pain is a minor ache once or twice a day when I stand up. It then fades almost immediately. I have had no mood swings, no anxiety or irritability since those two days of "brain fog" last month and no changes to any other part of my body (face, eyes, dark circles, etc).
I have needed to pee more frequently on 2 or 3 days in the past fortnight. This hasn't happened often enough for me to be entirely sure it is a symptom of using Rogaine.

CAUSE

I am 100% sure this product and this product alone is caused my sexual problems. I have never experienced sexual dysfunction at any stage in my life before (I am 38 years old). All other areas of my life are and were calm, settled and happy.

SUMMARY

It has been a month since I stopped using Rogaine and at the moment I have close to no sexual function. I was delighted a fortnight ago when things appears to have returned to normal. The downturn over the past nine days has been a blow.

I would love to hear from you if you have suffered sexual side-effects from this product or have good information about this. I would be particularly interested to hear from people that had an adverse reaction on returning to it after a break.

As I have lost morning erections and am cold and numb during the day I wonder if I should stimulate myself to the point of erection (not orgasm) to maintain bloodflow or leave myself alone to recover?

All tips, advice and shared experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Alex

Click the "start here" button up toward the top and on the left. Someone with more knowledge than me needs to answer your questions. My reply will put you back on top of the pile. There is info on nutrition there.

Dear Alex3035,

None can understand your problem except the one who has gone through or still going through with this situation. I read your post very carefully and found that these are the same symtoms, I've faced in recent past. These are almost same execpt the fact that I am also feeling one other thing and that's a strange sound in my ears.. It's like 'thul thuk' pretty strange...
First time, I started feeling this pathetic situtation after 3-4 months' minoxidil use and it's been almost same months, I've been off to this poison.
Let's start with good things- Now, I am sexually better and performing ok not as good as I used to be 6 months back but yeah, it's fine, I am atleast able to complete a full session of sex. Hardness of my penis during sex is quite fine and I would say, I've recovered as compared to that first phase when I was almost dead....sexually!
Bad things: Still , that hunger of sex not been there and I feel aroused when I see some porn or I create my own imagination/fanatsies. I know , there would be a group of people, saying like-- it's psychological but unfortunately it's NOT. I wish it could had been psychological .. but it's not...

so, Alex I know how tough is to face this frustrating, irretating and sometimes bit suicidal phase when you see no light at the end of tunnel but believe me dear there is a light .. as I said, I've reached a position from nowhere to somewhere .. however it seems destination is bit far.. don't know when I'll reach there....

Please don't stree out and don't bother much. Just try to be relaxed and yeah.. at your end, you can have some check ups done because what I see, real issue after a time is lack of sexual desires so might be Nitric oxide playing a part now...

keep posting.. hoping to hear some thing better.. and I'll keep giving my updates.. I am always there!

Alex, any update bro..???
From my side, It's been a long time, I am off to minoxidil approx 8-9 months but still I don't feel the same , I used to be.. still lack of desire!
able to perform full sex session but things are not same as used to be 1 year back... and now I started doubting, whether things will be normal or not!
My T and everything is normal. Main concern is: there is no sexual urge through out d day . I'm still trying to understand, which harmone/part/level is affected due to this poison that still it's not recovered to original stage...
Please reply if anyone has nay suggestion except that-''minoxidil is not the cause'' because m 100% sure, it's d real cause...

I am not aware of any studies showing minoxidil as causing sexual side-effects; it's a vasodilator drug with potassium channel opening properties, and is meant to be applied topically, given it has a lack of endocrine effects...I highly doubt it will cause any issues. Propecia on the other hand and other related chemicals can, and have had a history of reported and studied sexual and endocrine side-effects!

I lived a situation about this. I used it 3 months in 2012. It decreased my libido at that time but it was a hard time for me because I was having social problems and mino. may not be main cause.

I was having just 2 round in a sex and I had many more before using min.

So I asked after give us using this drug to my doctor and he said it can not make a chronical problem for you. It is just temporary effect.

So, I wanted to inform you about that.

Minoxidil has never been shown to cause hormonal side-effects because it is not a hormonal drug....it simply opens the blood vessels near the hair follicle which improves nutrient delivery thus aiding against hair loss.

Corageon, as far as I know it is produced being inspired by the side effect of a hypertension drug and it may effect vessels but I am not sure about it.

But you are right, I don't expect side effects to this extent.

It doesn't really affect the nervous system that much though, and it is used as an anti-hypertensive...not a stimulant. Therefore it is not remotely plausible that it would cause any erectile issues or libido issues.

Instead of constantly trying to find "some cause", why not work out, lift weights, meditate, ease your mind....go for a job, just do something to get your mind off of it!
It's not a hormonal issue. If anything - it's stress.
You can try some L-Histidine and L-Theanine, see if it helps.
L-Theanine will help counter stress buiildup and ease your mind.
Histidine will help boost your motivation and stuff...but honestly I think it's mostly in your head.

Hey Alex, I have also suffered from sexual/mental side effects from the use of minoxidil 5% foam.

I used it twice a day, for 2 weeks.

I had noticed it lowered my libido within the first week, noticed complete impotence near the end of the 2nd week

it has been 3 months since stopping the use of minoxidil (since june 12th)

and most of the mental side effects such as depression, anxiety, extreme emotional numbness have seemed to subside, and i can obtain an erection without the aid of drugs fine now.

I still have low libido, premature ejaculation, no morning/night time erections, but I have made some notable improvements in the past few months.

I was just wondering if you have gotten better and/or made a full recovery yet? I saw in your other posts on other forums you have been suffering for perhaps 12+ months which is terrible and my heart goes out to you bro. Please update us on your status, it would mean alot to me. Cheers

Courageon....do not state things which you are ignorant about. The mechansim of action of minoxidil is UNKNOWN. It is a potassium channel opener and those can have a very wide range of actions and effects...many of which we simply dont know. Futhermore, i was able to find a scientific paper which proves that minoxidil suppresses androgen receptor functions so it can have hormonal effects similar to finesteride. The clinical trials for minoxidil did not demonstrate any sexual sides but that is cause they are rare. Similarly the trials for finesteride dis not show sexual sides until it hit the market and lawsuits began pouring in....it seems even more rare with minoxidil but myself and the many others still suffering persistent sexual symptoms aftet discontinuation are proof that there is a post minoxidil syndrome.

He's banned and probably won't see your post. Please try not to bring up dead threads just to establish a counter argument.
