The real issue here is that many Americans are draped in the flag, so any negativity towards America is met with rabid hostility. The whole "nobody talks bad bout Murca or we'll turn em to glass" mindset. It's time to move past this and join the international community demanding appropriate government and corporate behavior. Just my 3c

Show me an example of appropriate government. Please.

I think you all should stop and read this>>> What Crime?

It explains that the guy is actually not violating the Espionage act Section 793, since "publishing" is not listed as illegal.

The other side is saying that in Section 794b, the word "publish" is used, and, to quote this article, "Yet this statute applies only to information that is published with intent to deliver it to the enemy, a fact any prosecutor would have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt."

Good article - don't really agree with it, but good nonetheless. And true - it may be "legal" but it may not necessarily be "ethical." Fine line there. It's like reporters breaking news on troop movement - huh? Really? You are just going to give the world our troops location? You're gonna bring a camera on the beach and broadcast a covert operation to the world? Legal? Under the law, certainly. But is it really the right thing to do? Believe me - I'm one for getting to the bottom of things as much as the next guy but I just think there are other ways to do it.

In my opinion Wikileaks is some sort of government, CIA, Black Ops operation that is designed to reveal unimportant documents that aren't really all that threatening to the power structure and deem it as a national security threat to pass new legislation for cyber security and internet control.

Governments do not deserve, and have proven they will abuse, any power that is given to them. Putting the power back into the hands of the people should be paramount. In this day in age, there is no need for the archaic practices of hiring people to represent us. Instead, maybe we should move to have a more secure voting system that would allow all to really weigh in to the issues.

Our civil liberties are disappearing at an alarming rate in the name of "keeping us safe". That worries me more than the repercussions of wiki leaks.

I do not want power in the hands of "every man." That is suicide. There are too many dumb ass people out there. The problem is a political scientist is given the same 1 vote as some inbred hillbilly who thinks people live inside the TV. Majority rule doesn't work in mental institutions.

Completely flawed logic imo. For one there is nothing more ethical than exposing the severe BS these sadistic bastards have been up to. And "I'm one for getting to the bottom of things as much as the next guy but I just think there are other ways to do it.". What are these other ways? How do you propose this happens? It's like saying, hey these drug dealers broke the law, we will let them appoint a Judge, run the trial and pick the jury ..then justice can be served. Getting to the bottom of things is rarely if at all possible in this current state of the world by going through 'proper' channels, the same ones breaking the law control the law. The only way to get to the bottom of it is to expose them by any means available and that is what is happening, and you can bet your ass they do not like it.

Plausible if it were somehow possible to control the internet. This is not something they can control, I am sure they will try but they will not be able to stop the spread of leaked info any more than they can stop file sharing. That is unless they shut down the internet completely.

-As you can tell I am a bit passionate about this. I feel as if humanity has been reborn and for the first time in centuries power is shifting back to the people. The citizens of the internet are becoming the new global super power.

No, they aren't, anonymous is pointless and almost useless. They will remain being cyber terrorists and vigilantes, but they will never be anything resembling any kind of a super power.

Who said anything about anonymous? They are like 9,000 strong so big whup. I'm talking about the 100's of millions of people not only praising the actions of Wikileaks, but are now developing a thirst for the truth. This is going to change things more than you think. The biggest super power in the world can't stop a few activists on the internet, so who has the power now?

it's a few nobody cyber bullies trying to make a name for themselves. They really aren't a big concern. When a few get put away for decades for their shenanigans, the others will stop.

And a former sailor here - hence one reason why we see what others don't ... but it's cool - we need the other side too ...

Just a note to let you all know that Stretch Armstrong has been temporarily banned for being overly aggressive and insulting on this thread and another one. A few other members will be receiving verbal warnings. We are not trying to censor anyone's views, but we WILL keep these discussions civil, and we WILL ban members who are repeatedly aggressive or insulting to other members.

I know that some topics raise people's blood pressure and sometimes heated words are exchanged.... but we expect everyone to behave well here, and be respectful of other members.

Thanks.

Anyway, Stretch does have (a little) legitimacy to his beef and I happen to share the concern. There are simply some things that should NEVER come to light about how things operate in government - I dare not call them "simple," but many folk just would not and do not have the capacity to really understand the bureaucratic crap that go on behind closed doors. Look at the case of the CIA agent that had her name/cover blown - incidents like that puts peoples lives at risk and I think that's the thing people really miss.
One CIA agent, who willingly puts himself in a dangerous situation, compared to hundreds of thousands of civilians?

The rest of the world is laughing at the two so called "superpowers" right now. China trying to censor CNN and BBC and the United States desperately trying to cover up, censor, hunt down, prosecute and even attack wikileaks. No one is really sure who is worse, but both look equally bad to the civilized part of the world. What's even worse is that the citizens seems to be brainwashed in both countries into thinking that the governments attempts at covering up every malaction (read: genocide) is for some kind of "greater good", and that the exposers (BBC, wikileaks) are the evil guys.

In Australia, I am amused that a senior australian politican is effectivly a US spy. His attempts in the paper today to put spin on it, were particularly mirthfull. Lucky we don't take pollies too serious.
