Everyone has to have an obsession. Just keep in mind that golf spelled backwards is 'flog'.

I just started this sport back up again. I bought a set of clubs from a buddy of mine at work who bought himself a new set so he sold me his old one for a song. Anyway, I KNOW my swing needs improvement. I keep slicing every shot to the right. Anyone know why this might be? Would it possibly be my stance? Perhaps I don't have my feet spread far enough apart? As for distance............man, I suck. There's this place called "The Islands Golf Center" like 5 min. from my front door. My gf and I went there today to hit some balls (I hit, she just watched). There is a big island right in the center of the lake and on the other side of the lake is a sign that says "250", so I assume the large island is the 125 foot mark. Anyway, I bounced off the center island today..........a first!

Great thread idea gator!

Alrighty as Gator mentioned, I am a golfer as well.

I've been playing recreationally since I was about 3 or 4, took a break from about ages 10-14 and started back up when I joined my high school golf team. I don't have near the impressive tournament record that Mr. Gator does (my highest ranking in a tournament was 2nd) and I'm currently about an 8 handicap but used to be right at about a 6 before the winter hit. As far as my game goes, I am a very streaky player when it comes to my driver (it's either right around 300 and dead straight or a 200 yard snap hook) and the strongest part of my game is definitely around the greens. To date my lowest round is a 75 which I shot mid last season.

I love my clubs so much! They consist of:
Titleist 905 Driver
Titleist 904 4-Wood
Mizuno MP-60 Irons
2 Cleveland wedges and one vokey wedge
Scotty Cameron Studio Design #2 Putter (My favorite club)

I feel like my clubs are absolutely perfect for my current playing ability but I have made a deal with myself for the day that I break 70 that I will treat myself to some Titleist MB blade irons just because in my opinion they're the sexiest clubs out there!

Gator can probably attest to the fact that anytime golf is mentioned in conversation, there is always at least one person who asks this question haha. Pretty funny if you ask me. As for my answer... I don't think so. 39 is respectable though. I was online for like a 31 one time until I got like a 10 on that fucking volcano hole that they seem to love to put there just to torture me.

Cleave, if you like muscle back irons, you should look into the irons I have...the Callaway X-Protos. I just picked them up last summer and they are like hot knife through butter when it comes to contact. I used a set of Titleist 690MBs for 5 years before switching to these Callaways. Much higher ballflight for a muscle back.

With to mini-golf, I am so fucking bad at that game it actually pisses me off. I can't putt well on the real golf course so mini-golf just pushes that button harder. I've wanted to Happy Gilmore clowns, windmills, and the dumbass donut holes for years and years. In fact, I try to avoid mini-golf like the plague now'a'days...It's just better for my mental health :D

MrBigDick: watch your stance. Make sure you aren't opening your body too much at setup. Meaning, do you have your body and feet pointing too far to the left (assuming you're right handed)? If that's the case, your tendency will be to cut across the ball causing a left to right spin / slicing spin.

None yet actually. Closest I've come was within about 3 feet on a 200 yard hole but that's it. I figure I've got my whole life to get one though so I should just focus on puting the ball in the fairway for now! What was that like though having 2 hole in ones within four days of each other cuz I might be inclined to quit on that note just like "I've mastered this game so on to bigger and better things"?! And were they good looking hole in ones? Because almost every hole in one story I've heard has been "I skulled it up to the green and heard a 'clink'"... one guy even told me about how he shanked one off a tree and it went in the hole. I mean what the hell people! Where do I find luck like that?

gator, I have my feet pointing straight ahead, but I think they're more than shoulder length apart.........does that make sense? Should they be closer together? I do occassionally hit the ball straight ahead but typically, I slice it to the right on a consistent basis. AT LEAST, I have NOT swung and missed actually hitting the ball since I decided to take this sport back up about a month or so ago. THAT is sensational news considering I used to swing and miss the ball when I first started golf as a teenager.

Your left side might be collapsing. Meaning, when you swing forward, your left half might be moving IN towards your body causing the cut across action that produces a slice. The golf swing should be simple: rotation. You rotate on your spine basically. Try to imagine your body as a pole that can turn but not move. Does that make sense?

It was pretty cool, but shocking as all hell. To this day I'm thankful that I'm not 21 so I can't buy drinks at the bar. Can you imagine the weekly bar bill I would have had?

The first hole-in-one was a great shot. Just one of those shots that you do say "go in the hole." This time it did. The second one, 4 days later and different course, was a bit of a mishit but nothing major. I got a fortidous bounce off the edge of a bunker and it just found its way to the hole. :D

Yeah, it does make sense. It's trying to put your words into practice that's the hard part....lol

I've always had a love/hate feeling for golf. I loved to play it, but hated my scores. I'm a squirell killing, worm burning, water skipping terror:). Mr Mulligan was my friend!
I new a guy who got so mad, he threw his clubs in one of the ponds. Funny thing was, he had to wade out in the pond to get his car keys out of the bag.
My father in law was a instructor. He passed away and I got his clubs. I now have his two sets(graphite and steel shaft) along with his complete Callaway driver set. I plan on selling them, but I'm not sure what there worth. I plan on sticking with the fishing. I keep a much lower blood pressure and don't drink half the beer.:fish2:

I actually threw a putter in the lake once after one too many 3 putts. Although it was very satisfying at the time, I cried later on once I realized the monetary magnitude of throwing a $250 Scotty Cameron into the abyss of a lagoon...

Haha this reminds me... I used to be a real big hot head out on the course and actually ended up breaking the shaft of my scotty cameron putter over my head after missing a putt in a tournament. I hadn't really intented on doing this, but when I held either end of my putter and stressed the shaft over my head, it ended up breaking the shaft. Unfortunately I chose to partake in this dumbass stunt one day before golf tryouts my senior year too. Talk about kicking yourself, I didn't have my own putter for tyrouts because they had to send it back to titleist for reshafting and I had to dish out $65 for a new shaft (it came to 80 after it was all said and done). It was so aweful! I've taken much better care of it since then though

Yeah, it does make sense. It's trying to put your words into practice that's the hard part....lol

And MBD there are two causes for a slice,

#1 - you're swinging outside to in across your intended swing path
- OR -
#2 - you're clubface is open at impact (it can also be a combination of both)

If you're able to check your divot, you should be able to figure out which one of these it is (i.e. if the divot is toward your target then it's probably the face of the club causing the problem and vice versa).

A couple tips I have is to make sure you're releasing the club down the target line (meaning let your wrists release) instead of holding on to it through impact and make sure that not only your feet are toward the target but your knees, hips and shoulders all have to be in allignment too. So know that I have possibly given you way more to think about during one swing than you would ever have wanted... I shall conclude this post :p
