Birthday parties with friends isn't the best place to take someone who you're just starting to date. It can make them uncomfortable and detract from actually getting to know you which is what she is there to do more than anything.

and since you're not even officially dating, the worst case scenario is that someone else at the party chats her up when you leave to go to the bathroom or get a drink and bang...you're out and the new guy is in.

lol just be yourself man. And take te iniciative. You will learn with time to "smell" each type of woman. Some you have to take them to watch a movie, others for a dinner, others to dance, other to a strip club and then straight to fuck. But you have to learn to identify the psychological profile.
