1. Decrease the Booze

Although some may think alcohol is a great aphrodisiac, thanks to its inhibition-lowering properties, that’s a myth. One drink may get you warmed up; however, more than one and alcohol’s depressant qualities begin to take effect. Too many drinks and you’ll experience a loss of erection quality and even the ability to orgasm.

2. Stop Smoking

Besides the numerous other health benefits to kicking this bad habit, a boost in your sex drive is one that many people enjoy after they quit. Smoking causes your blood vessels to narrow and restricts blood flow. Reducing blood flow to your penis not only reduces your sex drive, but also negatively effects your erection quality.

Physiologically, extra weight often leads to arterial disease, reducing blood flow to vital parts of your body, including your genitals.

Get a Little Sunshine and Boost Your Libido

This is the second installment of our arousal-boosting Valentine’s Day series. The benefits of moderate exposure to sunshine, in the forms of vitamin D, has been well-reported, but research conducted by the Medical University of Graz, in Austria, found that sunshine also can enhance your sex drive.

Research
Although small amounts of vitamin D can be absorbed through food, most of it is produced when your skin is exposed to sunlight.

Vitamin D and Sunlight: The Beginning of the Libido Boost

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient your body needs. Not actually a vitamin, vitamin D becomes a hormone called calcitriol (also known as active vitamin D). Although small amounts can be absorbed through food eaten in your diet, your body is designed to produce vitamin D when your skin is exposed to sunlight.

The two forms of vitamin D are:

  • Vitamin D2 also known as ergocalciferol, which is found in plants, and
  • Vitamin D3 also known as cholecalciferol, which is found in animals.

Both of these forms of vitamin D are created by your body when your skin is exposed to the ultraviolet rays of sunshine. These UVB rays convert a substance in your skin known as 7-dehydrocholesterol into vitamin D.

Turning Sunshine into a Testosterone Enhancer

Once the body has converted that cholesterol into vitamin D, with the help of the sun’s UVB rays, it’s still inactive. The process to becoming the arousal boosting testosterone follows a few more steps:

  1. The sun’s UVB rays come into contact with the skin.
  2. The UVB rays convert 7-dehydrocholesterol in the skin into vitamin D.
  3. The vitamin D is then absorbed into the blood stream.
  4. Vitamin D is passed through the body, to the liver, where it is turned into the prohormone 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (AKA calcidiol).
  5. Calcidiol is then passed to the kidneys, where it is converted into 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (AKA calcitriol or active vitamin D).
  6. The active vitamin D is then released back into the bloodstream.
Research has shown those who have more exposure to sunshine have increased testosterone in the bloodstream -- a key hormone for a healthy libido!

Sunshine, Vitamin D and Your Sex Drive

Research conducted at the Medical University of Graz, in Austria, found that men who had at least 30 nanograms of vitamin D per milliliter of blood, had had significantly more libido boosting testosterone in their bloodstream. Additionally, they found the average testosterone levels of the men in their study fluctuated with the seasons.

Testosterone levels in their subjects began to decrease in October (the beginning of the winter) and reached the lowest levels in March, when the region experience the least amount of sunshine. These findings support previous research that surmised an hour of sun exposure can boost a man’s testosterone levels by as much as 69 percent!

Knowing the importance of testosterone’s effects on the libido, getting outside and catching a few rays even in the winter months is key to keeping your sex drive healthy.

You can boost your libido with several arousal-enhancing foods.

The Food – Arousal Connection

Your libido is affected primarily by your hormone levels, especially testosterone. If your hormones are out of balance, you may feel it in a lack of arousal and general desire. Testosterone production is dependent on three key nutrients:

  • Zinc
  • Vitamin E and
  • Vitamin B

As we age, our need for these libido-boosting nutrients increases. Adding a few key foods to your diet can make a big difference in the bedroom.

Oysters have been believed to be an aphrodisiac for thousands of years.

Oysters: The Original Arousal Food

For thousands of years, people have believed oysters are a potent aphrodisiac. Although this belief may have originated from the oyster shape resembling female genitalia, these delicious mollusks are also quite high in zinc. As noted earlier, zinc is key to testosterone production. Raw oysters also contain high levels of N-methyl-D-aspartate and D-aspartic acid, both of which have been shown to increase testosterone levels.

Avocados
Avocados are high in folic acid, vitamin B6 and potassium — all key to male and female libidos.

Avocados

Avocados not only contain high levels of folic acid, which helps your body metabolize proteins, but they also contain vitamin B6, a testosterone building vitamin. For women, avocados are high in potassium, which help regulate the thyroid gland and enhance arousal levels in your partner.

Asparagus
Asparagus is a great source of vitamin E.

Banana
The banana’s phallic shape likely inspired its first rumors of its aphrodisiac properties.

Bananas

The phallic shape of the banana is one of the reasons this fruit became a popular aphrodisiac. However, it’s arousal enhancing benefits go beyond its physical shape. Bananas contain high levels of riboflavin (a vitamin B) for testosterone, as well as potassium for a libido boost for the ladies. Additionally, bananas contain a bromelain enzyme, which has also been reported to have positive effects on the libido.

The capacian in hot peppers
The capsaicin in hot peppers produces similar physiological effects as sexual arousal.

Hot Peppers

Hot peppers get their “hot” from a chemical known as capsaicin. Ingesting capsaicin produces  similar physical responses as sexual arousal, such as:

  • Increased heart rate,
  • Rapid breathing, and
  • Sweating

Capsaicin also increases blood flow, an important effect for increased sexual arousal.
