premature ejaculation long enoughWhat is premature ejaculation? According to Sexual Medicine: Sexual Dysfunctions in Men and Women, premature ejaculation is deemed to occur when orgasm happens with either minimal sexual stimulation or soon after intercourse has begun.[1] When this happens frequently, it’s the medically diagnoseable premature ejaculation.

WHAT IS PREMATURE EJACULATION?

For men who have stamina issues that are less severe, premature ejaculation occurs when he orgasms sooner than he and/or his partner would like. Though estimates vary, this could be 30 seconds or 30 minutes into the act.

Outside of the medical realm, premature ejaculation is a very personal thing. It’s not the same for every man. If you are not able to control your orgasm for as long as you want, that’s considered premature ejaculation.

Time is not the issue — Lack of control is.

There are both physiological and psychological factors that cause premature ejaculation. Address these factors, and you can take control of your orgasms and your sex life.

HOW DOES EJACULATION HAPPEN?

Before we delve into the causes of premature ejaculation, it’s important to understand how ejaculation happens in the first place.

When you reach a critical level of sexual excitement, nerves in your penis send chemical messages to your brain. Your brain then responds by sending it’s chemical messages to the penis. These messages cause orgasm and ejaculation.

 The 2 Phases of Ejaculation

There are two phases of ejaculation — the Emission Phase and the Ejaculatory Phase.[2]

  • Emission Phase – During the emission phase, the vas deferens begin to

contract to move sperm from the testes, toward the back of the urethra and prostate. Secretions are also released by the seminal vesicles into the back of the urethra as well.[3] These chemical messages activate the sympathetic nervous system and begins the ‘point of no return’ (PONR). Beyond this stage, ejaculation is inevitable.

  • Ejaculatory Phase – During the ejaculatory phase, the posterior urethra senses the sperm and secretions and sends a signal to your spinal cord. The spinal cord then sends messages to the muscles at the base of your penis, causing it to contract and force ejaculation.
